BES requires a messaging platform. Exchange, Domino or Groupwise.
Not all BlackBerry Messaging is encrypted.
BlackBerry PIN messaging over the public RIM infrastructure is "scrambled" not encrypted.
It is only encrypted if you use a BES and enable a peer-to-peer encryption key.
If you want a truly private encrypted messaging platform using BlackBerry devices, then you need BES.
