It's unclear to me whether a phone with GSM / Edge can become 3G capable via a firmware update. Technically it's possible if the transceiver is a Software Defined Radio instead of custom, dedicated design.
Yeap...spectrum will not be cleared except for 2-3 cities (markets) this year and TMO is using their 3G spectrum to offload their congested 2G network. Voice..voice...voice only!
