I know that BES is relatively secure ie well encrypted. Can the same be said for BIS? Or does one have to be careful about sending confidential or sensitive info/attachments?

Comparing BlackBerry Internet Service and BlackBerry Enterprise Server features
BlackBerry Search Results

Security:
Email messages sent between the BlackBerry Internet Service and the BlackBerry Internet Service subscriber's BlackBerry smartphone are not encrypted. When transmitted over the wireless network, the email messages are subject to the existing or available network security model(s).

When you log in to the BlackBerry Internet Service, the data is transmitted over a Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) connection.

I am not sure about BB MSGR.

Thanks

Just a point of clarification, while not encrypted, what is SSL and how much security does that provide.

SSL is the same thing used to protect your credit card through websites.

Sorry to be a little obtuse, but if I understand this correctly there is some level of security using BIS?

Any data traffic sent across RIM's infrastructure is encrypted. This includes BIS and BES.

However, BIS cannot be considered "secure messaging" because once the message leaves RIM's infrastructure, the message is no longer encrypted.

Thanks. Sorry to drill down into the weeds but some of this is a little above my pay grade! If I understand this then, an email from one BB to another via BIS or BES has some level of security. I understand that once an email, either BIS or BES gets sent to another "outside" email account it is no longer secure.

No, that's not true.
In order for you to send an e-mail to another BIS user, at some point in the delivery route, the message must leave the RIM infrastructure to land itself on the recipient's mail server.
During that leg, there is no security.

Many thanks. I think I am getting it!!

It sounds as though there is not one RIM infrastructure but rather carrier specific or other distributed infrastructure. So in sending across carriers it heads out and then back in at another point. I guess the same could be said for BES where you send an email outside of that BES environment.
