Obviously it's your choice...however:
There is no "experimentation" about it...it's like getting Windows XP from Dell or from HP, it's the same OS, the main difference is themes that vary between carriers - there isn't anything different that can negatively affect the functionality of your BB. Remember that it's RIM that creates the OS, not the carriers.
Verizon support agents have suggested to me that I try upgrading the OS on two separate occasions...I have never had any issues getting support regardless of the OS version I have installed.
If you want to wait you can, but you really don't need to. Whichever carrier's release of an OS version you choose to load doesn't really matter.
Regardless of when you load the new OS, review this thread at that time to improve your available memory...
