Google maps vs standard map application
Please Login to Remove!
I'm a new user of a BB Storm and this is my first use of a BB. I notice that a standard Maps application comes with the Storm and I can download a Google Maps application.
Can someone explain the relative strengths and weaknesses of each app? Why would I use one versus the other, or are they redundant?
Thanks,
Bob

Why not try them both and decide for yourself? Personally, I like Google Maps better.

Agree. This is one of those personal things. I believe each has good and bad and have had both, though I don't have google now. You do need to try and see for yourself. No harm, and you can delete it later if you want.

ATT charges a fee for using the Telenav application that is preloaded on their BB's
I use RIM BB maps and Google. No issues with either.

Since your on VZW wireless BB Maps will actually use the satellites to find your position, Google will use the cell towers to find you position, not as accurate but you shouldn't notice much of a difference.

I thought Google used the internal GPS to work?

The OP is on VZW so the GPS is locked down to just the BB Maps application, unless he's paying for GPS monthly.

Not true. I think a recent software update opened GPS on Verizon.

GoogleMaps uses cell tower triangulation to update your position until GPS locks on. Makes it a bit faster.
IMHO, I prefer GoogleMaps as it also has traffic.

Check out the GPS Section of the Forums. It has a sticky with reviews of most of the GPS/Map applications for the BB. Then download and try them out for yourself. You can always delete it if you don't like it.

VZW opened the GPS for the native BB Maps app only. There's a thread over in the GPS/Mapping forum containg a list of other navigation apps users tested which did not work. (unless things have changed)
(congrats on the mod position!)

There are a couple benefits I see with BB Maps is when tracking it doesn't lock North to the top of the screen and will rotate based upon your heading. But, that can be slow sometimes. One other cool thing is it can send your location using BB (novelty) and integrates with the BB Address Book.
Google Maps is better at everything else, and, a big plus if you live in an area supported, is it will give you transit information. It shows subway stops in NYC too.
I keep both loaded, WLS too but use Google more than the other too.

i downloaded google maps and really liked the interface/accuracy, however it locked out my internet browser and wouldn't let me access any sites. everything else worked fine, i just couldn't get on the internet. i posted a thread about it and never got an answer on why or how to fix...curious no?

Google maps is better than most of the other mapping apps out there IMO - works great with your on-board GPS - pretty reliable maps although they do go wrong from time to time in parts of London in terms of streets - like people say why dont you have a play and see what you like

Like the ike others, I have both applications. However the BB Map application has a great feature that i like and tha is the ability to "Send Location".
If you are giving someone directions you can load the location on the BB Map.
You can then click on options and choose "Send Location".
This can be sent via E-mail or MMS or PIN.
I have used this feature several times to give directions to my home, work and other particular locations.
I inadvertently loaded Google maps the other day and was trying to perform this function....ain't happening.
