Electronics and moisture don't play well together. There have been reports of simply having the device in a sweaty pocket causing erratic behavior. The problem is, once it gets wet, you really don't know what kinda damage has been caused until things start going wrong. And even then it's not clear what to repair.
I have also heard people dropping their devices only once and ceases to function.
These days cell phones are mini computers and should be treated as such. Not like the simple dumb phones in the past. You can try and repair it, but probably not worth the time, effort, or money.
