Default Are you currently insured ????

I insured my Pearl with SafeWare but, unfortunately, the policy did not cover mechanical failure. When my Pearl died, I had to buy a whole new device. With my new Curve, I am going with T-Mobile's insurance (for now).

If you are the owner of your device (as opposed to employer owned)...

I am curious about how many of you are insuring your phone and with who.

Skip this poll if you do not own your Blackberry (i.e. employer provided).

I voted no, but I don't pay for mine....it's work issued, and I'm the sole order person

You made me realize a flaw in the poll so I added a caveat. You know how precise these things need to be!

Interesting question. I was just thinking about this ... today!

I'd never felt the need, until about 3 years ago, I lost a cell phone that was a month or so old. Because I was locked into a plan with Cingular, I wound up paying full retail for a new phone.

Since then, I've had the insurance for $5 a month, and when I got my 8310, I call AT&T to find out if my BB is covered. That would be NEGATIVE, but they were still planning on charging me. Nice.

Billing problem was fixed, but I was still thinking of merits of insurance. Never heard of safeware until this post. Checked out their website and they want $69 for a year. The $5/month seemed OK, but the $69 in one shot seems steep.

I had Safeware on my Pearl until it died on the 14th month. It only covers damage/theft. That's good. I mean, it is cheaper. But when my Pearl died, I had to pony up for a brand new phone with minimal discount.

Tmo insurance covers mechanical failure.

T-MOBILE has a deductible...

---

One other thing to mention is that with T-Mobile, there is a $110 deductible on the insurance!

After 40 months (3yrs 4mos), you have put in $240 at $6/month. Add the $110. You break even if a new phone costs $350 (this is what I paid). I assume the phone gets cheaper over time so you have to adjust for that.

It's a matter of deciding when to dump the insurance.

Never for me.

I take really good care of my phone. I had insurance for about 2 two years. I never used it once. I did the math and figured its not worth it. If anything happens, i'll just buy the phone out right.

But i've never lost a phone or damaged it. The only thing "bad" that has ever happened was my first cellphone. Smashed the LCD screen once, but I went online and bought an LCD and put it in myself. Everything worked great until I was drinking one night and somehow spilt a lot of stuff on the phone. Screen didn't come on and some keys stopped working. Hey, I was young.

Since then, every phone i've had has been in amazing condition, perfect and not a scratch.

I am covered (or at least I think I am) by a specialized company. It just covers robbery by means of violence or threat. In Brazil, it is quite an issue, happens all the time.

Theft in other circumstances is not covered. Neither is any kind of damage.

If you add it up, it is not worth paying for insurance on an item at this cost. Most of the companies that do insure your device have been screwed so many times by the users that they cover very little.

This is why ATT/Cingular doe not even offer insurance any more as they got tired of being ripped off!

I have to agree. I have had plenty of high-end phones (many much more expensive than the BlackBerry) and have never thought that the cost of insurance at the current rates was worth the trouble vs. the coverage available.

AT&T has made it a practice never to offer insurance on data/media-phones until they have been out for months...and even then Lockline insurance is a huge ripoff for the coverage they provide. So...I guess I have pretty much never even considered searching for insurance on my phones since I've been told "no" so many times.

I have been covered by my insurance company before. Was only 24 bucks for the year. Total coverage lost my BB they sent me a check for retail price! and by this time my previous BB had been replaced by the 7290 ended up getting it for less than retail actually made money from them

I said this before in a similar thread, take that money and invest it. You would be doing something similar to what the insurance company is doing. Pay yourself $5 a month/$69 one shot and put it into the bank (or investment of your choice). If you are the type of person where something always happens to your phone, than become more responsible and take care of your investment (phone). Accidents do happen, people do steal, etc., but there are some things you do have control over. In my opinion, the insurance is not worth it.

I don't do cell phone insurance mostly because of T-mobiles' ridiculous deductables. Not only do you end up paying about $60 a year for smart phone warranty, but the detuctable makes it nearly impossible to justify the plan.

I'm really interested in these 3rd party insurance companies. I looked at safeware, but they're for laptops and desktop pc's. Are there any others that you guys recommend? Not to mention I'm a college student so really the only insurance I have is health and auto insurance.
