I don't think the problem is with your Blackberry. I had the same problem with PocketMac not always starting up or starting a sync when I would connect my Blackberry. Like you, it would typically work once out of every four or five tries. I switched to MissingSync and have had flawless syncs since then.
As for not showing up on your desktop, do you have a memory card installed in your Blackberry? I am guessing you do not. The Blackberry itself won't show up on the desktop, but the memory card will.

I think that's pretty clearly a USB issue with your iBook. Different peripherals need different amounts of DC power in order to work. Obviously, charging a Blackberry is going to take a lot more power than, say, turning on the green light on a jump drive. My guess is that your iBook's USB port simply isn't delivering enough power to charge the Blackberry, though you may still be able to sync with it.

My advice is to get a microSD memory card and MissingSync and you will find that it is very easy. In MissingSync, you simply check which document folders and iTunes playlists you want synchronized to your Blackberry when you connect.
