Just got my BB Bold today and trying to figure out how to have mobile network and wifi active at the same time, but use only wifi for internet connection and not be charged from my data plan. I know that I could turn the mobile network off to acheive this, but then I can't receive calls while browsing the internet. My settings are currently:

Default browser configuration: Hotspot Browser
Default MDS browser configuration: Company Browser
Default WAP browser configuaration: Media Net

Is this set-up correct for what I'm trying to acheive? Thanks so much!

Since you seem to have MDS you probably have a Blackberry data plan with BES and BIS enabled. If this is the case then you needn't worrry since the blackberry will automatically route BES and BIS data via Wi-Fi whenever it can (the Wi-Fi icon turns from grey to white when this is the case).

If not, then that set up is probably optimum.

Plus, do you not have an unlimited BB data plan? If so, why worry about being charged for data?

But if you are on BES, you need to make sure the IT Policy doesn't limit you.

I don't have an unlimited BB data plan, nor do I have BES or BIS. They may be enabled on this phone since I bought the from a guy that used it with his job.......but I'm on an AT&T pay as you go plan. I plan to add unlimited data but as of now I don't have it and would like to use my home and work wifi for data without being charged. Is there a particular setting that would allow me to do this without turning mobile network off? I was originally told that using Hot Spot Browser as default would automatically use my wifi access whenever in range, but so far, I'm still being charged for data from AT&T. Any help would be great....thx!

Blackberries will always use data, particularly if you haven't wiped it and cleaned out all the service books from the previous owner. It will be trying to connect to the RIM Operations Centre to connect to the old BES and BIS accounts.

If you are very careful about what you load on the device, and how you manage your connections you can probably do what you want, lots of people seem to be able to.
