I'm not exactly sure what i can and cannot do with the PIN locked. But i wouldnt use data on the phone anyways.
I just want it for wifi, txt, phone, music, calender, BB maps and other basic phone stuff but nothing with data.
will i be ok?
will there be a problem with the Preproduction hardware? and software can be easily updated right?

BB maps will not work without a data connection.

Calls, sms, calender, music etc will be fine.

With the PIN locked it is just like a device without a data plan.

Here is a great link to what can and can not be done. Also like stated above BB Maps will not be an option.

Nope, not on a preproduction unit that RIM has disabled the PIN.
