I was able to send an email thru my BIS email account, just now. Hopefully that's a good sign.

Update:
I swapped my SIM card from my Bold to my unlocked 7105t and mail goes through fine. Looks like I may have an issue with my Bold. :(

Whatever the problem is, it seems to be very inconsistent.

Same - at 9:05 EST I got all of my emails since 1PM all at once. Hopefully this means service is restored.

I got all my emails at 9:26pm EDT. No battery pull.
The first one was sent at about 2:00am EDT (co-worker)
This is in the Massachussetts/New Hampshire area
I also got a SMS message at around noon that was duplicated twice more.
All seems ok now.

Sprint customers are also reporting issues so it's not just ATT and not hogwash. From what I can see there are people not getting service in TX, CA, and NYC to name a few.
I'm paying extra for this?

I've had issues all week with this...
I'm in Verizon in Michigan and I have had an issue in the Pontiac area, where I work and a majority of my usage occurs, and my phone switches between 1EX and D regularly. Sometimes it will happen if I simply move away from my desk, sometimes it will happen when I finish sending a message. There is nothing I can do to recreate this, nor is there anything I can do to stop it from happening.
I had this same issue happen between Christmas and New Years, it would go away when I left work. I've stopped calling on it because Verizon reps can be clueless sometimes and I've rarely had them offer to send me to RIM...
