Default NeedVideo! OS4.2.x on the BB 8700? When?

Please Login to Remove!

What is the story with upgrading the OS to 4.2 on the BB 8700?

The day after I bought my BB 8700 they released the 8100 that has a camera and will play mp3s and do web based video. I'm not too happy.

And now Apple has released a phone that will do it all (and as usual, probably best)

I know there is no hardware to support the camera (oh well) and I don't want to use my BB for music but I do want to be able to access video (mpegs, qt or wmv files) without a big hassle. I want to be able to demonstrate video to clients through my bb.

it seems that if the BB 8700 was upgrded to a vraiant of OS4.2 tht it should be able to have the same multimeda capability.

I know about BBTV and tried to install it but there needs to be more universal video access on the BB. should be able to see CNN or CBS news etc. from website without an added subscription.

BB ought to be able to do a limited resolution/fps delivery of mpeg video.. Servers could offer video at the reduced data rate. Codecs should have a real easy PnP drag and drop convertor to have BB ready video available from sites. (probably already do).

It seems tht if the 8100 can do the multimedia video play the 8700 should be able to too.

Let's put some presure on RIM to get the the OS upgraded to deliver on the 8700 ASAP.

RIM is already working on OS 4.2 for the 8700 and should be releasing it this year. You'll just have to be patient, or switch to the 8100.

In my opinion, the 4.2 OS for the 8700 is probably shelved until well after the 8800 release. There have been multiple working beta releases for the 8700 so it could be pushed out the door. If you think of it, any RIM OS release is never complete (how many 4.1 versions are out there) so why should this be different. However, as the intro of the 8800 approaches, it would make sense for customers to see a distinct advantage over the 8700. The features present in the 4.2 OS would really make the 8800 look good compared to the 8700 and may push 8700 owners to simply buy an 8800.

Don't agree. I'm not convinced that RIM is making a lot of money off the handsets. I think their real revenue is coming from their piece of the action from the data plans. That being said, the more people are using their blackberries, the more profitable they are, regardless of model used.

Um... that's how it is. New products are constantly being released. You'll always find something newer with more features. Surely you researched into what you were buying? I don't understand the issue...

You definitely haven't done your research. The iPhone does not have push email. You can't load third party apps. It will hardly "do it all".

Do you develop software or hardware? It's never that simple. You do realize how little memory the 8700 series devices have onboard, right?

My thoughts exactly. Video on the 8700, for what? No external memory capabilities.

I use a 60gb ipod to display videos to perspective clients. Converting files to *.m4v's is a hastle but a small price to pay for mass storage.

Video on the 8700 will bring it to a screeching halt! I hope we aren't going there. This is a business device, for Pete's sake. Not a kids toy!

My understanding is there are parts of the 8700 CPU for multimedia that have not been enabled and the new OS will "turn on" these features. It's supposed to allow good quality video without bogging down the device.
