Default TElus 8830 Unloked?

Please Login to Remove!

Hi everyone, I have searched the site as well as Google, but seems like no one is 100% sure if telus 8830 are locked or unlocked ( I mean the ability to use a sim card from a local company when I am oversee). my Network filed under the SIM option says active, someone claim this means it's locked, and others say there are sprint phone's also showing that.

So, is there anyone who really tested it? if it's for sure locked, is there a way to unlock it? like by calling the tech support?

Please advise!!! Thanks in advance.

try a sim from an other carrier to test lock/unlock.
for unlock call your local carrier.

Thanks for your reply, can you maybe tell me how to tell if it's unlocked when I insert other carrier's sim card in it? I have tried insert an Rogers SIM card (which is a Canadian company who runs GSM network, I know the band will not work on this phone) , SO when I go into the SIM card option, it shows:

SIM Card: Security Disabled,
ID: (some long number)
Phone number:
(The right GSM number showing)

After I type MEPD:
It shows the following:

ID: (some long number)
Personalization:
SIM Disabled
Network Active
Everything else shows Disabled

Can anyone help?

Network: Active means the phone is locked.

... but not always true on the 8830.
Every Sprint 8830 we have here says Network: Active, and they are most certainly unlocked.
We also had Verizon unlock one of our 8830s, and it also reports Network: Active.

I think this might be a bug in the 8830 firmware.

It's my limited understanding that the 8x30 (World Edition) phones' SIM's are by nature unlocked, due to only european GSM bands being enabled on it.

So in North America, US/Can GSM sims won't work in it because of the bands used; and overseas, using overseas GSM sim cards, they will. Testing for lock/unlock status by putting a North American SIM card in it would not be a good test if you want to be 100% certain.

The Verizon 8830 is locked. I believe it will only work with a Vodafone SIM outside of the US.
Only recently has Verizon started offering unlock codes for the VZW 8830... and the requirements for obtaining such codes are rather strict.

The Sprint 8830 is unlocked by default.

I'm not too sure about Alltel or Bell or any other carrier.

I have a Telus 8830 from Vancouver which I purchased in September, and it worked perfectly upon arrival in London using my Orange sim-card. That being said, the phone was registered to Telus, and therefore, I was unable to get BB service, but basic phone/SMS worked fine!

HTH,

Josh.

So from my understanding the TELUS 8830 which is Unlocked (again from my understanding) will only work in GSM mode while on a european network (Telus will roam on CDMA in the US ..I guess) becuase the US networks do not use the same band as overseas...so no matter what i do to the phone...MY AT&T or my T-Mobile US Sim will never work on my 8830??
