Re: BES Upgrade 4.1.6 to 5.0.2
all worked as expected (Ow3n's method), but when I log into the Administrative Service, I see both the Old and teh New BES servers. I thought that i should not be seeing the old one there ? or is there a step to remove it from the bes domain ?

Re: BES Upgrade 4.1.6 to 5.0.2
Hi all,
We'll be moving from old server, BES 4.1.6 to new server, BES 5.0.2, as well as upgrading from SQL 2000 to SQL 2008 in the next couple of months. Just waiting for new SAN and servers to arrive and be configured. Which of the two posts, Knotty's post (#3) or Ow3n's post (#18) is the definative post to follow or is there something else I should be looking at?
Thanks

Re: BES Upgrade 4.1.6 to 5.0.2
New hardware for BES server (Currently running in a VM and new will also be a VM (old VM running w2003, new to be running w2008 R2 64-bit)) and new hardware for SQL server. SQL server to run SQL 2008 (current server running SQL 2000). We're also going to be replacing our current clustered Exchange 2003 servers with clustered Exchange 2010 servers.
Thanks

Re: BES Upgrade 4.1.6 to 5.0.2
I would make a new database for the new BES. Then use transporter to move user over. Then you can move the mail boxes over to new Exchange after it is tested.
This will require a second SRP, easy way is to get a migration kit from RIM if you are on T support.

Re: BES Upgrade 4.1.6 to 5.0.2
Do have T-support, so will get the migration kit.
So we make a new DB on the new DB server, using the 2nd SRP we get from t-support along with the migration kit. Then build new vm for BES and install BES 5.0.2. or whatever is the corect verions number. Migrate users from old BES to new BES, still using Exch 03. Once that is done and tested working we can move mailboxes to new Exch 2010 cluster. Does that sound about right? Should I still follow yours or Ow3n's posts? Does it matter if the old server was called VMBES the new server is called something else?
Thanks as always

Re: BES Upgrade 4.1.6 to 5.0.2
Thanks for the guidance.
This likely won't happen for a month or two as like I said we're waiting on new servers, storage, etc to arrive, be put in place, configured, etc.

In the end I followed Ow3n's method, as I moved everything at once to the new SQL2008 Server, New Hardware, just because I didnt have a 2nd SRP Key so had to do a Cutover - it worked fine.

Re: BES Upgrade 4.1.6 to 5.0.2
A possible wrinkle in the plan:
Part of this whole move to the new servers, etc. is to also create a new domain. The name of our organization has changed. Once up, tested, and running properly our users will be migrated to the new domain. All new servers we build will be part of the new domain. So we will actually have 2 domains running at some point. Old BES server on old domain and new BES server on new domain, old Exch 03 server on old domain, new Exch 10 server on new domain, etc.
How messy is this going to be, etc? Thankfully we have a T-Support contract as I imagine I'll need plenty of assistance.
Thanks

Re: BES Upgrade 4.1.6 to 5.0.2
For exampe, let's say our current name is "smittytrade" and domain name is smittytrade.com. Our new name is smitty. Our new domain will be called smitty.com. All new servers will join and be part of the smitty.com domain. Old servers will be on the smittytrade.com domain. After creating new Exch servers we'll install exch 2010 and do forest prep, etc. It will need to point to smitty.com. We'll build the new BES server and then install BES 5. which will also be part of the smitty.com domain
Hope that answers your question.
Thanks

Re: BES Upgrade 4.1.6 to 5.0.2
Sounds like you are making a new exchange org, if true then a wipe and activate will be needed with a NEW BES Server.

Re: BES Upgrade 4.1.6 to 5.0.2
So when we move the users to the new BES and EXCH servers we'll need to wipe and reactivate the BB's? IF so, can we just reactivate or do we also need to wipe it?
Thanks

Re: BES Upgrade 4.1.6 to 5.0.2
Only way to remove the encryption keys is by wiping.
This is why a new Exchange org sucks with BES.
If making a new domain with in the same excahnge org, no wipe required.
