Also I did notice that the Command String he gave me is longer than what people have posted here... I don't know if it'll make any difference but he said to enter

+cgdcont=1,"IP","wap.voicestream.com","",0,0
Did you get your error 692 resolved? I have the same problem. Would love to know how you took care of the problem. Thank you.

Great Tutorial.

I have a question though. I'm in Mexico and my service provider is Telcel. How can i find out the command string I have to use for this provider? In costumer support they dont have any idea.

Thanks!

This is pretty sweet. I had some initial connection issues....the string has to be this exact:

+cgdcont=1,"IP","wap.voicestream.com"

I had a space after the last quote and it didn't work until I removed it.

If you are looking for a speedy connection don't bother, but in emergencies, it serves a purpose.

Thanks,
Z

Hey guys,

I bought my 8100 Pearl unlocked on eBay a few months ago and I'm with Cingular. I have been searching around and haven't seen a lot of clear instructions for the Pearl operating as modems for blackberry users with Macs (Powerbooks 10.4.7). Any help?

Thumbs up Working with Cingular

Thanks to all who figured this out and for the turorial. I was able to follow the instructions with the only difference being in the extra initialization string for the modem. Here is what worked for me: +cgdcont=1,"IP","wap.cingular"

I just did a few speed checks using speakeasy which shows I'm averaging 180K down and 25k up.

I've gotten mine set up and it worked great while I traveled over the holidays - thanks SF your step-by-step worked great. but now I'm back home with my wireless network and the BB keeps wanting to connect - how do I turn it off, it isn't set at default (the home network is) I don't want to delete the connection because it was a pain to setup. I just want it to stop trying to connect all the time. any suggestions?

Did you try to disable the connection? (Right Click and Disable. To Enable it again once disabled, Right Click and Enable). You can find your connection icon in the Network Connections under Control Panel.

Any Cingular members out there? I have the Blackberry Unlimited plan ($44.99 a month). I noticed they also have a tethered plan for over $70 a month. If I use my Pearl as a modem with my current data plan, will I receive additional charges? (I know I should probably direct this question to customer service at Cingular but their wait times are unbearable and customer service is horrible)

thanks, I'll try that as soon as I get home. sometimes the most obvious things are the hardest to figure out. hiding in plain sight, as they say.

edit: don't have that option, that's why I couldn't find it before.

I did not get charged for the 2 or 3 minutes I was tethered last month. However, don't blame me if they notice high traffic. On the other hand, I haven't heard of anyone getting billed for this tethering in my casual perusals here or on pinstack or on the fibble instruction post. Also, for what its worth, the fellas at the Cingular store where I bought my pearl said there was little they could do to stop us from tethering once we had it working.

I think the tethering price is primarily priced for the USB connection software instead of any particular technical limitations of forwarding TCP packets. My guess is that Cingular can't tell whether a data packet is originally from Opera, BB browser, or bluetooth forwarding.

not sure I understand: am I leeching off t-mo - by paying for the unlimited data? or are they leeching off me by charging me for a service I'm using?
don't mean to be dense, but I'm only on my first cup of coffee

Thanks folks. Works great. Writing with it now. How are the speeds when not on the EDGE network and on the GPRS (I won't be able to test for quite some time)?

My connection is unreliable. Although the tray icon shows I am connected I cannot connect to any web site. The phone also cannot receive email and cannot access the web with the BlackBerry browser.

I have to reboot the phone to be able to reconnect.

Anone any ideas?
