I, too, am coming from the Pearl 8100 into the 8320. The main reason I decided to change over was the fact that I had my Pearl replaced 9 times through T-Mo warranty exchange, and it seemed to be an ongoing, never-the-same-issue, process for me. However, I *did* love my Pearl.
I first saw the Curve on AT&T's network, and silently cursed T-Mo out for being late in the game (again)... but, the time came, and on Day 1, I ordered the Curve (at regular price, of course -- I wasn't eligible for an upgrade).
I received my Curve yesterday, and immediately began playing with it. I compared it with a magnifying glass to my Pearl, and this is what I came up with:
Likes:
1. The screen is wonderful... bright, big and easy to navigate.
2. The sound quality on the phone function is about equal.
3. The camera and flash are much better than that of the Pearl.
4. The media is very much louder than the Pearl.
5. The "manage connections" menu is easier to use than 3 or 4 separate icons.
6. The size and weight of the Curve surprised me. It's not "that much" bigger than the Pearl. (not too noticible to me, at least.)
Dislikes:
1. Of course, the loud keyclicks and scrolling even when muted.
2. There is more wind noise when using the handset to place or receive calls.
3. The keys are TINY, and I hit the wrong ones or two at a time accidentally (thank goodness for the Spell Checker).
4. The UMA crap keeps making me drop calls if I don't turn WiFi off before I use the phone (I don't have the @home service or router).
5. The media is very much louder than the Pearl. (also a Like, but some things sound very distorted).
6. What happened to the silver sides?? The black plastic seems (in my opinion) to cheapen the apperance of the Curve compared to the Pearl.
7. I miss SureType (at least until I get used to the small keyboard or my fingers shrink).
With all of that being said, I weighed both sides last night and wanted to make a decision on whether or not to keep the Curve. I was absolutely in love with my Pearl, but I got tired of having to have it replaced every month-in-a-half because of a different issue. I think I can get used to the Curve's keyboard, and it's functions - but I'm gonna keep my Pearl just in case. I am not a huge fan of the WiFi yet, but I'm sure that will come in time.
On the final note, I called to return the Curve in exchange for a new one, hoping to elimiate the "grainy" feel and sound of the trackball... it almost feels as if I have to "smash" the trackball to scroll... My replacement should arrive tomorrow or Friday.
If anyone knows of a way to disable the WiFi calling, but keep the WiFi data connection on, please forward it my way.
Additional opinion: If you've got the Pearl, and aren't eligible for an upgrade yet, I don't think the Curve is worth $399 from T-Mo. Give it a few months, and it will be down to where the Pearl is now, hopefully.
Oh, and I am hoping that the Pearl doesn't become another Razr... I noticed that a year after T-Mo introduced them, they suddenly gave birth to the Gold one, the Red one and the Blue one... If it's going to be like that, God help us all.
Thanks!
