Default Mentat BlackBerry Client Beta Available, Seeking User Feedback

Please Login to Remove!

We've been working on a native BlackBerry client for our free Mentat Organizer task management service and a beta version of it is now available for download.

We're looking for evaluations and feedback from users, particularly GTD advocates, so that we can make it even better.

For more information, please see Brain Murmurs » Mentat BlackBerry Beta Preview

At installation I got this:
Uncaught exception: Module with handle [907] and index [0] has no application entry point.

Whatever. The application runs. But I can't see any of the tasks I had created from the desktop previously.

OK, I start a new task. But there is no OK or Save option. How do I save it? The answer is I don't. I can't see it from the desktop, and my login info is no longer there if I close the app and launch it again.

Can't be much more "beta" than that...

Can you tell me what model and OS version you are running? We're using some boilerplate code from RIM for startup and people other people have reported seeing similar errors in other applications. Any information about the device this is running on would be helpful.

It sounds like the login failed, and we aren't reporting the failure or setting the menus appropriately to reflect that. We'll take care of it today.

I totally agree. Nothing sucks more than investing time in something and having it be a total dud. I assure you that the app works well, but this is a clear example of how one flaw can result in a hugely negative user experience.

Awesome feedback, we'll go fix it. Thank you.

Login fault handling has been added into the latest version (0.76) along with a few other minor tweaks.

Default Download links

BlackBerry OS 4.2 Version: "http://brainmurmurs.com/products/mentat/v42/MentatBlackBerry.jad"

BlackBerry OS 4.1 Version: "http://brainmurmurs.com/products/mentat/v41/MentatBlackBerry.jad"

edit: the forum is abbreviating the download links and I had to put the links in quotes to get them to print out completely. Don't include the quotes when trying to download. Is there a way to stop that from happening?

Typical gotcha: typing "brainmurmers" instead of "brainmurmurs".

I just tested the 0.71 version. It wouldn't work although I used the correct login and password. It says "Login failed, try again."

That error message pops up too darn quickly. Obviously, the program isn't even trying. I'll bet it balks because there is no direct TCP connection. I only have BIS, my carrier does not allow any kind of direct TCP connection. They won't even provide an APN. I will never be able to use your services if your application won't support BIS.

Daniel, why is that my phone has to demand a reboot every time I uninstall one of these betas? Do you know how long it takes to reboot a Curve? Do you realize how annoying that is?

Um, hopefully you mean 0.76. Pretty sure that you do, or you wouldn't be seeing the login failed dialog at all.

Mentat works great with BIS, but you do need to be able to open HTTP connections for it to work. Which carrier are you using? We've tested Mentat in-house with T-Mobile and Verizon, both using BIS service.

As far as I know that is coming from the OS, not us. Considering that I end up installing upgrades several times a day on a Pearl I can assure you that I am intimately familiar with exactly how annoying it is.

Mentat uses persistent storage to save off your login information and starts up at boot, which means that the BlackBerry operating system requires a reboot after an update.

Default New Mentat Screenshots Available

Mentat got a facelift this weekend along with the ability to handle comments from other users. See our blog for more details.

My personal favorite is the new task HUD.

Hey ok this is probably were I should have put my problem...I am trying to download mentat for the 4.2 version. I have an 8100 and every time I try to download through BB browser I get error 404 meaning that my browser says the address doesn't exist. I have tried entering in the address from my go to option and by going to your preview first and clicking on the link there. I can get the 4.1 version to download but I can't install it because I have 4.2 but I can't even get to the download screen for that version on my blackberry. I can get it through my desktop so it isn't a dead link, and I can get it through my Opera mini browser but I can't download it because only my bb browser has that option.... any suggestions?

Just a question, Did Mentat get its name from the Anne McCaffrey 'Freedom' Series?

More likely from Frank Herbert's Dune series. Let's go off-topic! ;)

Sorry...I'll stop now.

If you need a Mac beta tester that is tearing his hear out with

Mac Leopard - Mac book Air / can run Parallels with Windows XP
Blackberry BIS 8300 (soon to get 8900)

currently running

Pocket Mac for sync
BB Tasks

Tried and didnt like

Remember The Milk
REX ToDoMatrix

And totally fed up with all of them.

I am jealous of Omnifocus - but cant stomach a move to iPhone to use it.

I feel I need to move over to BES to get over the air sync of email / calendar / address book and PLEASE GOD! MY NOTES....

Any GTD features - a bonus..

Getting desperate .. I have wasted a REAL lot of time trying to find the right solution..

The thread is over a year old!

It's likely out of beta now.

Download the 30 day trial and see what you think!

I am so weary after trying so many systems - I need user comment.

This seems web based I cant see any clear way of getting my Mac Mail text into it ..? (short of cut and paste)
