Default Software Config, App Policy, & Uninstall

Please Login to Remove!

Hi boys and girls. I'm stuck on this one. And you know if I'm stuck, it's gotta be a good one. I've searched around here and at T-Support but found nothing.

I downloaded GoogleMaps ALX for BES and did the loader.exe /index without any problems. Created a new configuration to deploy it; no problem there either. Successfully deployed to a device wirelessly; yay!

Then I experimented to remove the GoogleMaps app by creating a new policy called "disallow." Essentially the disposition is "disallowed" for the application. I applied the policy to the config and set it for the same user again. Yay; uninstalled from the device as expected.

Now I want the app back on the device again. I reset policy back to allow the installation of the app for the configuration. Applied the GoogleMap config back to the user. It's been 2 days now and the app still has not installed on the device.

Yes, I've clicked my Update Configuration Check Status and my Application Status still reads: Install Required.

Is there a past temp file or something on the server side that might think that the app is presently installed when in fact it isn't? I can't seem to find anything.

Good stuff, DarthBBerry! My guess is a dirty Policy cache not being cleaned up properly; something like a pointer is not set to NULL when it is supposed to be and still dangling there until you restart the program. Try restart the Policy service and re-apply the software config. Do let all of us here know how it goes...

So I had some go arounds with RIM on this issue because I decided a whitelist would a the best way to manage the apps on our BB's. I created it per the instructions from RIM (its not rocket science), took the "deny 3rd party app install" out of my IT policy and applied both the new IT policy and then the Software config to my BB's. Google maps disappeared off of every one it was previously installed on and it would not re-install. It did re-install when I upgraded from Google maps 1.4 to 1.5, but like DarthBB, if I used policy to remove it, or did it manually, I could not re-install. Here is RIM's official answer:

"There is a couple ways available to help resolve the application not resending:

1) Remove the user from all software configurations for 1-2 polling cycles (4-8 hours): This would be the most effective method and should resolve the issue without having to perform any other steps.

2) Delete the Google Maps folder from C:\Program Files\Research In Motion\BlackBerry Enterprise Server\PackageCache\FILESHARE\Research In Motion.

3) Rename the Google Maps folder that is in the C:\Program Files\Common Files\Research In Motion\Shared\Applications\.

If one of these steps alone does not resolve it a combination of them should. Step one should resolve it on its own but a combination of step two and three may be required.

Thank you for using BlackBerry Technical Support. If you have any questions or comments, feel free to contact us."

I refuse to accept this as the answer. There has to be something in the DB that I can clear manually or using a script. I am going to look at that next. I'm a bit nervous though because I know nothing about DB's so wish me luck!! I'm going to guinea pig my home BES first, so feel sorry for Nastypenguin, lol. I already wiped out all the 3rd party apps he had on his BB, but he took it well.

I've been going round and round with RIM because I can't get the apps to uninstall. I have a software configuration with a policy set to disallow. The BES manager says the configuration is applied on my device, but the software won't uninstall.

WOW am I frustrated!!!

Did you wait the 4 hours? That has been the most frustrating part of all this. you make a change and have to wait 4 hours to proclaim it definitely didn't work! They told me it can give "false positives" (its a good thing that their business isn't pregnancy tests) until the next refresh which can be up to 4 hours.

And if you get as irritated as I did, you can set the top level "applications" to "disallow" and that should take them off - of course it takes all third party apps...

I think they created that 4 hour window so they could get you off the phone. One of their other favorites is restart the policy service, which restarts the 4 hour clock, and gets you off the phone.

Sorry to hijack this thread and turn it into a T-support rant.

lol, I hear you. Does anyone know if there is a way to shorten the software config refresh interval? I have heard that one of the reasons it is so long is to no overload the server, but I only have 22 users.

Do a search on this forum, there is a registry key you can change to shorten the polling interval, but it will put some extra load on the server. We have about 500 users, so I don't dare.
