Can you view and use full use of YouTube? MegaVideo?

Flash is not supported. You can view Youtube videos by going to m.youtube.com.

youtube isnt flash for mobiles.
or rather the site you view on a blackberry isnt flash.
Flash just isnt supported on a BB yet.

gmail, yes both through BIS email and an email app.
FB app yes.
Yes you can upload pics from the BB to FB.
Skype is no.

So using GMail on O2 contract as the primary mail push (I want gmail account to be instant email, I never use POP3, even work and other emails all go to my gmail in labels and folders) would require third-party application?

Megavideo - does it work on the BlackBerry 8520?

Are there no apps for skype?

Can you tell me about this tethering, very new to it, I think it means that I can take my laptop on the beach for example, put my BlackBerry 8520 via usb into the laptop and use that as a modem - if this is correct, does my BlackBerry 8520 support it? Does o2 allow it? If not can I still get away with it without or with a charge?

Maybe a read of our FAQ and use of the SEARCH function is in order?

There is an article in the FAQ on tethering. One thing, you need to make sure your carrier allows it so you don't end up with an unexpected data bill. Some require an additional tethering plan on top of the BB data plan.

There is no SKYPE or VoIP client fo rthe BB. SKYPE was in beta, but nothing has come out yet.

You might want to check the Aftermarket section of SEARCH for iSkoot. I think that is the app. I think it allows SKYPE messaging. Don't use so can't say much about it.

No, you can get it through the BIS (email push) but it wont be instant. its near instant.

yes the BB will support it, but O2 may charge you extra/may not allow it. you have to ask O2 (technical support is best)

To further re-iterate on what everyone is saying you can set up the BIS for Gmail or you can download the Gmail App for Blackberry

For flash websites, you're best bets are possibly to download Opera Mini or the Bolt Browser as they are FAR better than the standard browser however there is still no guarantee it will work properly... Until the Skyfire Browser comes into play (or if RIM get the finger out...) then no full Flash, Silverlight etc support can be found...

YouTube's mobile site does work providing you use Wi-Fi, when i had a Bold on full 3G coverage the quality was nausiating to say the least and Wi-Fi did make that a bit better... There are a couple of apps on BlackBerry App World which are used for YouTube stuff, can't say what specifically as i don't use and ultimately have no need for them as the mobile site does my needs perfectly.

Finally with regards to Tethering i'd be real careful with that one. I called up O2 customer support as i said to them that i was intending to tether my Blackberry to my Laptop occassionally (note the key word being occassionally) and the operator at the other got real arsey with me... Basically O2 would rather you didn't OR would prefer you to get the Mobile Broadband Dongle things, which are utter gash...

Plus using the Curve 8520 as a tethered modem, in my opinion, is a bit daft as it's a GPRS device (or EDGE if you live somewhere that has EDGE coverage)


Other than the above points, the Curve 8520 is a great phone, i prefer this to my Bold...

Well for one thing the software's a DAMN sight more stable! No update every week routine for me now!

Also with twice the amount of RAM available, the device is very snappy and responsive - combined with the Media Keys at the top of the phone making it a pleasurable device to use when you're using it as an MP3 Player (My Phone + 16gb MicroSD card = no iPod requirement)

Plus i now kind of prefer the QWERTY keyboard on the curve to the bold however the big thing for me is the trackpad - SO much of a step up from the Trackball!

Not really - i owned a BlackBerry Bold for a year or so and used the GPS functionality and Google Maps twice if your lucky...

Me personally? It's a nice gadget to have but not essential really...


And aintgonnafindme, tried YouTube on the BB Browser over Wi-Fi and it works fine - don't expect HD or even High quality off it but it works

I have the 8520 and love it. Wife got the 8900 and the trackpad is just so much better than the trackball. The media keys are also nice. Not so sure about the responsivness.

One bad thing is no flash and weaker camera, but you can't have it all.

A little expansion on my findings on the Curve 8520...

Got a couple of themes for it (one of which being the free Scenic theme from Elecite which is bloody gorgeous!) however i am finding myself slightly bored with it now!

The one thing i did love about my Bold was that it had the 3G radio in it and as i used to stream youtube vids or music on it was near enough on par with Wi-Fi (if a little laggy)

So in other words for basic stuff like SMS, emails or calls then 2G or EDGE will suffice however if you plan to do any downloading of any kind then i'd suggest waiting until either you get home or anywhere that has a Wi-Fi network - EDGE coverage in central scotland i've found to be sparse and GPRS download rates will either infuriate you with it's pathetic download speeds or take you a trip down nostalgia lane where you reminise on the days 56k dial up internet was the standard...

Wi-Fi is great for an additional signal to 3G but having to depend on WiFi for any form of downloads is a burden...
