BB+Snapdragon, likely?

Hi there, I am new to this forums, but a somewhat longtime BB owner. Using my third right now and looking for a fourth.
Anyways, I was wondering, considering Snapdragon is out, and how HTC and almost all Droid phones have embraced it, I was wondering if RIM is working around this chip too?
I like my 8520, but I need something faster much of the times, is there anything like this in the near future?

It's probably safe to say RIM won't be adapting this anytime soon - the main issue i see mainly is the Java Virtual Memory manager and combating that one elusive problem all BlackBerry owners face - memory leaks...
I could put safe money on the fact that if BlackBerry had either more memory (or better memory management) that would increase the performance of your BlackBerry possibly up to 25-35% possibly...
BlackBerry hardware has never been the issue - it's 95% of the time software related... It would be nice to have a BlackBerry with a 1GHz SnapDragon processor however i would take 512Mb RAM or 1Gb RAM over 1GHz cpu anyday

Snap dragon would be insane on the BB.
I'm running the bold 9700, and my god, that phone is blazing fast. I couldn't imagine if there was a snapdragon in there. The bold really doesn't feel like 628mhz, swear it feels alot faster.
But I will agree, I would take the higher ram over more mhz....it's fast enough right now!

Then it is RAM related all the hangs on the BBs...
I was wondering of the Snapdragon, considering how the nexus one is incredibly fast and all, and since RIM is going to show (in theory) at WES the Talladega (the slider), I was wondering what they have done to up the speed on the new generation of BBs...

I've used an 8520/8530.
Even though it had the same processor and ram as the 8900 I was using at the time, I does feel slower than the 8900. I would guess this might be software related. The 8900 felt fast, considering I came from the 8320.
The bold 2 9700 blows them out the water. Even though it has the same processor speed as the first bold, its a huge difference. Im assuming its all software related that makes it snappy.

This basically confirms my theory on why BlackBerry's wont be adapting the Snapdragon processor anytime soon... The Bold 2 only has a 624MHz processor (a la Bold 9000) along with 256MB RAM (a la Curve 8900) yet the refinement of OS 5.0 is plain to see when comparing to older models...
My Storm 2's OS 5.0 is faster than the Curve 8520 i used to have - very snappy and responsive... I swear to you all - if RIM nail the Java VM thing on the head and stop the memory leaks, then the BlackBerry smartphone platform would be a formidable competitor... Once that's been done then RIM could possibly afford the luxury of jazzing up it's GUI (like HTC Sense for example)

I don't suffer from memory leaks anymore. It will drop maybe 10 megs, and that's it.
Looks like something they fixed since 5.0. (actually i didn't even have this problem with 4.6 on my 8900)
It ain't like the old 8300 days, with memory constantly running out and battery pulls.
Besides, all phones somewhat suffer from memory leaks. |

For the BlackBerry OS 5.x it would be insanely overkill. If the UI received a (much-needed) visual overhaul, then perhaps. Imagine an HTC-designed BlackBerry? Imagine something like the recently-announced Evo. That would be so sweet...

The 4G one? BB is just using 3G so that seems unlikely...but the new slider one, should be a little heftier on the UI, perhaps they are cramping in something more powerful?

I have been using HTC Leo 1ghz +488 ram and I can asure you it was very fast,but you have to keep in mind that windows OS is very heavy OS not like BB OS, so I can not imagine how fast BB would be with the same chip... but as you said guys I dont see that happening any time soon...:(

Sorry to dig up an old thread but I really hope RIM realizes that speed/responsiveness of the iPhone and Android devices is one of the reasons that they've gained marketshare. That plus the ease of use and graphical features of the iPhone and Android OSes. I just switched back to my Storm2 9550 after using the HTC Droid Incredible (which has a 1GHz snapdragon processor) for 6 weeks and I really miss the speed and the web browser on the Droid Incredible. The Storm2 feels so slow compared to the Droid Incredible.
I've seen the videos of Blackberry OS 6 and it the new features should make it competitive with the iPhone and Android (which does not have the detailed features of the BB OS) OSes. All RIM needs to do is release some new touch screen devices with a screen resolution of at least 800 x 480 pixels (not 480 x 360 pixels like the Storm, new Bold slider, Bold 9700/9650, etc), with snapdragon processors, running BB OS 6 and the webkit browser that is hopefully as good as the one on the iPhone and Android based devices.
The biggest challenge will be getting decent battery life out of a device with the snapdragon processor because the battery life on my Droid Incredible was terrible.

I thought I would be a BB lifer, but my wife just got the EVO and I have to tell you, after playing with for a short time, i don't know what I will do when my contract come up for renewal and I get a new phone. I hope that the new BB Slider is out and available from Sprint at that time (January) because i like what I have seen with that, but I am up in the air right now. |
