Unhappy Bought used Pearl...has random reboot/restart problem

Please Login to Remove!

Hi,

I'm a total newbie, so please be kind!

I bought a used T Mobile Pearl off craigslist here in Houston for my wife and immediately started having a random reboot/restart problem (the seller has since gone non-responsive, but that's another issue).

Anyway, what happens is that when the Pearl is running off the battery (ie, not plugged in to the wall or the computer), it randomly reboots, sometimes every few minutes, other times it can go for 30 minutes or more before rebooting. This effectively makes the phone unusable.

I searched here and googled alot over the weekend and tried the following: cleaned the battery contacts, wiped the Pearl from the Security menu, d/l'ed the latest DM and Pearl OS from the T Mobile website and reinstalled the OS, wiped the Pearl completely using the JL Cmd (or whatever it's called) program and then reinstalled the OS and bought a new battery. None of these things have fixed the problem. Other than that, the Pearl seems to be working fine.

From the "About" screen, the OS is listed as v4.2.0.64 (Platform 2.2.0.37).

Does anybody have any suggestions on what else I can try or if there's a newer OS that may solve this problem?

Aside from feeling ripped off by the seller, I feel bad b/c my wife was very excited to be getting the Pearl (she currently has a 7730 which is big, bulky and ugly).

Any suggestions would be much appreciated at this point!

You can try the newer OS, it *may* help. However, if you wiped the device with JL_Cmder and reloaded the 4.2.0.64 OS it should have worked fine after that if it was an OS issue. It sounds like it is a hardware problem.

Thanks for the replies. I'll try the newer OS, but something tells me it won't help. Easy come, easy go, I guess.

Forgot to mention that when I wiped the Pearl using Jl cmdr, I couldn't get it to connect with the battery out of the Pearl (as the instructions tell you to do). The only way I could get Jl cmdr to connect to the Pearl and then wipe it was with the battery inside. Would this make some kind of a difference in terms of the wipe process?

Wiped it again with JL and then installed the newest OS recommended above. Initially it seemed like it was working okay (I just had it sit on my desk without a SIM card and it didn't reboot except for maybe once or so). Then, I put in my SIM card, connected to the network and now it's rebooting like crazy! Took the SIM card out and it's still constantly rebooting now...it's actually worse now than before (didn't think it could get any worse)!

Okay, this is weird. Now, I've noticed that it reboots more frequently when the wireless is turned on. But, when I turn wireless off, it doesn't reboot that often (though it still does reboot). I didn't notice this pattern when I had the latest T Mobile OS on there (though I wasn't particularly paying attention to this).

Also, sometimes when it reboots, it just goes to a white screen for a few seconds and then to the home screen. Other times, it goes to the white screen and then the spinning hourglass, T Mobile splash screen and then finally to the home screen.

Got sick of dealing with this thing. Sold it locally to someone who needed the parts. At least I was able to recoup some of my money. Thanks again to all for the suggestions and input.

Wirelessly posted (BlackBerry8100/4.2.0 Profile/MIDP-2.0 Configuration/CLDC-1.1 VendorID/100)

Had a similar problem with my old pearl. Only it would reset whenever I tried to make a call, or if someone tried calling me. Unfortunately the only option was a phone swap. You might also wanna try a new battery(one of the things they recommended during the troubleshooting).
