Default How much memory is too low to be dangerous? 4 MB to 6 MB?

Please Login to Remove!

I recall reading a long time ago posts about memory leaks and such, and can't recall what they were due to (maybe someone can give me a quick summary? , but that when they started happening, you'd start losing data like emails and messages, IIRC.

Well, I've been checking out my memory the last few days out of curiousity, and it seems to hover between 4.5 MB and 6 MB, which seems pretty low. In the past, it used to be over 10 MB with the same settings.

I've not changed settings at all the last few months. I still only store 3 months of emails (it says it's about 3300 messages), 300 SMS's and 600 contacts.

The only big change I've made was in the last month I installed the vlingo software. The other apps I have which I've had for a while are google maps, Opera, Docs to go, and my provider's own media player.

So my question is first of all, how much memory is too low to be dangerous, and what might happen?

Secondly, anything I can do about it? Should I uninstall some of the other apps I hardly use, like BB Maps and brickbreaker? Will that help?

Thanks!

I have not fortunately lost any emails or messages, or call logs, which was the first sentence I read in that post.

So my first question is at what point does it become dangerous and you risk starting to lose things? If it's only around the 2 to 3 MB mark, for example, I may not worry about doing all the things in that post...

My personal opinion is anything less than 10-12mb free is dangerous.

Wow... ok, so I'm a bit below that! Yikes!

For now, this is what I did, which seemed to have worked somewhat.

I hooked it up to DM, and went to Backup and Restore, Advanced, and clicked Clear on Purged Messages (whatever they are). That managed to instantly free up 0.5 MB interestingly enough.

Then I went to App Loader, Add / Remove Applications, and I was shocked to see that Docs to Go takes up 2 MB, and Help takes up 1 MB. I left them there for now, but since I don't use BB Maps, Brickbreaker and Password keeper and they were using like 0.5 MB or so, so I uninstalled them.

When the BB rebooted, it said it had a whopping 12.5 MB of free space! WTF? In the last few days, I'd done full reboots a few times, and that still hadn't freed up any space, so how did deleting a couple of little apps all of a sudden add 5 MB of space???

Applications have, since the beginning of time, not properly cleaned up after themselves. It's called "A memory leak". Rebooting the BB resets all of the problems, so you now have 12.5mb free. Check tomorrow and see what it is at...

Interesting... I had read that doing a hard reset helps things, which is why when I noticed last week I was down to only 6 MB, I did a few, but it hadn't helped, which is why it had me puzzled how this time it made a difference. I might get rid of Docs to Go and possibly Help too, since I've almost never used them...

Bummer... checked this morning and now it's down to 8 MB. Now what?

So this memory leak, in a nutshell, is there a solution to it, or is it just a known bug on these devices and one must monitor it/do hard resets once in a while? I've got the 4.5.0.102 OS too...
