Exclamation FYI on Nextel Service and SIM cards

Please Login to Remove!

This is just for informational purposes only..

After talking to a friend that just switched out his 7510 to a 7520 some information has been brought to my attention, so I thought I would share it with others on Nextel.

SIM Cards

All of your 3 digit sim cards will work in the 7520s however some applications will not work such as Bluetooth. The 7520 sim card is the only one that will allow the bluetooth use.

Themes

If you take your 75XX in for service and you have installed extra themes on they will not touch it. They say it is a modified product and the will not warranty any modified phones.

This information comes from a Nextel Service Center via a very reliable source.

IANAL, but that just screams "violation of Magnusson-Moss Warranty" to me. They have to prove that the "modification" is the cause of the malfunction in order to deny warranty service.

Had fun with that and the dealer on my Eagle Talon TSi AWD: "Exactly how does an air intake and a cat-back exhaust violate the warranty on my stereo?"

Oops. That's the Magnusson-Moss Warranty *Act*, or more properly, The Magnusson-Moss Warranty - Federal Trade commission Improvement Act of 1975.

I can't type today.

Not true.
I've used SIM cards from i730 phones, BB6510, and BB7510 devices. All upgraded to 7520 last month. Bluetooth works fine on all of them... which was one of the primary reasons for upgrading. I honestly can't see how a certain type of SIM card would disable bluetooth.

the bluetooth has nothing to do with the simcard. and honestly why would you not get the proper simcard for your phone. the contacts on blackberry are not stored on the sim.

Guys I am not trying to argue here I am just telling you what I was told. But I do know that Nextel will not in any way shape or form warrant a modded nextel phone. I have tried on a i730 that I modded the code plug for american dialing and made it read Dawgs I730 on the start up. I dont know about the bluetooth. I do know that my partner just got a 7520 and tried his I3XX series sim card and his Bluetooth didnt work and he has had nothing but problems three days ago he put the original sim back in and since he hasnt had the first issue it may just be coincidence but I have seen that first hand.

I used a 730 sim in a 6510 and it burnt the sim card up in about a month.

Cool

Don't shoot the messenger people. Shoot me becase I was the one who told Dawg this. I was told this not only once, but twice by NEXTEL.

First time I was advised, I purchased my son a 7520. He had an i860, should be able to use the SM. Tech said no, we have had issues where customer can not get BlueTooth to work, emails not forwarded to handheld even after BWC was updated.

Second Time was this past weekend. I finally purchased a 7520. Called NEXTEL to change my services. First thing the rep asked was if I was using the SIM card that came with the 7520, I said yes, but asked why. I was repeated what I just stated above. I was then also explained that once they asked customers to use the 7520 SIM cards, calls dropped. They couldn't explain why this is, but its happening.

So like I said don't shoot the messenger. Dawg got this infor from me, and I got it from NEXTEL.

I wasn't trying to jump down anyone's throat, and I apologize if I gave that impression.

It was the themes that I downloaded from this site(see post How many blackberries have you gone through?) that crashed my last 7520.I brought phone to Nextel which wouldn"t boot up and they exchanged for a new one.

Just change back to the default theme before sending it in for service. But really, they don't service the phone, they just send you a replacement.

Unhappy

Well I just bought a new i830 and I tried an experiment the functions of a phone are tied to a sim card I slid the 7520 card into the i830 and i can not assign a ringtone to a contact with this sim card slid my wife i730 card into the 830 and it would allow me to assign the ringtone so it is true that functions are assigned to a particualr sim card. its not a big deal that i cant assign the ringtone but was one of the features I was looking for in my weekend phone. As a matter of fact I just laid the two cards side by side and they are quite different in apperance too the yellow is the i830 card the gray is the true 7520 card

I never said anything about putting a Blackberry SIM in to an i730 or any other Nextel phone. I was talking about the other way around. You originally wrote that using a 3-digit phone SIM card would disable Bluetooth in the Blackberry, now you're talking about the opposite?

Of course some of those SIM cards might not work in anything other than a Blackberry.... those phones rely on the SIM cards memory for storage, whereas the Blackberry does not. I never said they were interchangable.
I still stand by my statement. None of those 3-digit SIM cards are going to cripple any of the Blackberry features.

No what I am saying is not all sims are the same as has been stated many many times. I used this as an example that the features can be disabled by the sim

Wirelessly posted (your electric?: BlackBerry7520/4.0.0 Profile/MIDP-2.0 Configuration/CLDC-1.1 UP.Browser/5.0.3.3 UP.Link/5.1.2.12)

I use a 128k sim in my BB and in my i860, which allows me to personilize the phone also.

and all the features work? Because they dont on my i830 I can put the sim that came with the phone back in it and I am able to personalize. with assignable ringtones. With the sim out of the blackberry I am unable to do it.

**UPDATE**

While at the mall with my daughters I stopped at the Nextel store. Not an Authorized dealer. I asked one of the reps there about this SIM card issue. This is what he said:

"I am actually a repair tech, pulling overtime at the store. As a tech we noticed an increase in BB service repair orders, BlueTooth not working, apps not loading, running slow, memory running out, even after apps were uninstalled. Holster profiles not working, and a few other things. The only thing that seemed to clear these problems up was to actually use the sim cards that corresponded with each BB. Once we started doing this we did not see a return of those BB's. The ones that we repaired but left the SIM card brought in with the BB, returned within a matter of weeks. We also noticed an increase in SIM card replacements specifically for the BB's."

He showed me a memo on this issue and what they were supposed to do, I tried to get a copy so I could post it, but he said he could not let me copy it, he wasn't even supposed to show it to me. The memo was on Nextel company letterhead, it was authentic. So as near as I can figure, if Nextel is making such a big deal out of it, it must be causing problems.

FYI:
For Telus MIKE users in canada -
We have a ton of 7510's at my office and a bunch of people have been upgrading to 7520s over the last few months. There have been 0 problems with any of them, using the old sim card in the new 7520. Telus even told us to do this when we started ordering the 7520s for people who wanted them.
