I can't see why GPS would need data plan if I am NOT planning on using G-maps or BB-maps or telenav or anything.

All I want is taking pics with GPS.

GPS uses Data to download the maps. Not sure on Rogers but on AT&T with no Data Plan it just uses PayPerUse data to transfer the maps. Not sure what you mean by taking pics with GPS??

He is probably referring to geotagging.

The GPS works (as far as geotagging images) without a Data Plan as far as I know.

On your BB, you can check Options > Advanced > GPS > Menu > Refresh GPS and check. Be outside in clear view of the sky, give it about 10 mins to refresh.

If it refreshes, you should be good to go just for geotagging.

I've heard about GeoTagging, but do you have to refresh your location before taking pics for it to tag correctly or does it just tag with your last known location?

Google Maps works without coverage. I can use google maps to use the gps, but wont load the maps. That's about it. Kind of useless to me though.

The bottom line it that it's pretty useless to have GPS and not have a data plan.

I disagree... I do not have a Data Plan but I use the PayPerUse fee for AT&T when ever I use my Google Maps/GPS and have yet to run up more than $10 for the month that I installed GoogleMaps. If you only use it a couple times a month, the PPU cost is significantly lower than the $30 a month AT&T wants for the plan. I would love to have it as I would probably use the internet more on my phone, but times are tough so saving $20 a month or more is top priority.

That said... If you are a delivery driver or someone who uses GPS Navigation daily for work it might be well worth it to have the Data Plan.

That's not true, GPS works fine anywhere in the world with or without a data plan. Canada included.

It's not all that useful, but it most definitely works.

Wirelessly posted (Blackberry 7280)

It's not the GPS that needs the data plan. Just the maps.

Try TrekBuddy. It's free, and it let's you use pre-loaded maps that are stored on your device. Check out the GPS & Mapping forum for details.
