Question Saving SMS on the 9700?

Please Login to Remove!

Wow no internal memory on the 9700. Wondering why?

Besides that I've noticed that when in the inbox, while having an SMS highlighted and then selecting the menu button, there is no "save" feature like there was on the Bold 9000 and/or the previous OS.

Is there a way to save SMS messages on the Bold 9700 and 5.0 OS?

Are you talking about the 1GB internal storage that is in the 9000? I never used it. I saved everything to the microSD card. I think that the majority of 9000 users felt the same way, so to aid in the downsizing of the 9700, they removed the internal storage.

The 1GB of storage on the 9000 is exactly what I'm talking about.

I'm very big on security, the BB is always locked. I must enter the password a 100 times per day, and I'm fine with that. With the internal storage I was able to keep important documents on the device itself, say for instance a PDF of my passport or drivers license. This is good for travel, should you lose your wallet. So I used it not for a bunch of stuff, but for a handful of items. I also kept the custom ringtones, and pictures for the caller ID. That way if the card is ever damaged or pulled, all of that information is on the BB's internal memory and it's not "searching" for that file that it needs.

With that said, I believe the SMS messages were one of the items that were stored on that internal memory, though I can't confirm that. When I did my device transfer through DM, all of my old saved SMS messages are on the 9700, but I can't seem to save any new ones.

I feel just the opposite about storage on the MicroSD and here's why, if your phone is left unattended it's very easy to snag the MicroSD card itself very quickly. Even with it being encrypted the data is gone. (I don't want to get a bunch of useless replies saying, "They'll just take the entire BB then." I'm talking about places at work and what not where people are a bit more inconspicuous when it comes to theft, and don't want to take the entire unit.)

Well what's done is done. So back to the question of being able to save SMS messages or not. I'd be good with those going to the MicroSD as I have no choice.

Anybody? Has anyone been able to save SMS messages on their 9700? If so how do we do it?

Are you kidding me? Am I the only one that nukes his entire message box everynight? If they are really important to save, just "forward as e-mail" and mail them to your personal e-mail and store them off the berry. Same for those MMS pictures that you get from your people at 3AM.

I pretty much do the same thing. No need to keep all that stuff... and like you say, if something is important, I have an app that dumps a txt message to a memo OR I can forward it to my pc as an email.

Because you don't get the option to forward the SMS message either. You don't get "save" in the menu, nor "forward".

I use an application called Atomichelix Notify! which allows me to save my text messages to memo files. It adds a menu item that says "Save to MemoPad".

I appreciate all of the information on alternatives. Thank you. I'd still like to find out definitively thought if this is a limitation in the 5.0 OS or the 9700 itself due to the lack of internal storage.

I would like to be able to save my messages too....I usually get information for work the next day that I would save to my BB and then delete as I finished the task. This is really a bummer

Thanks for bringing this back around. I was just thinking the same thing again this morning. It seems so elementary to be able to save SMS, and with all over O.S. versions we have been able too. I've actually used saved SMS as evidence in court. It was totally admissible. I would be willing to do a 3rd party app if it worked just like the O.S. save.

We had it in previous releases...and all other IM's on the BB can be saved either to the card or memory...so technically, there should be a way RIM can make the "save" feature available. Perhaps it's a limitation of the threaded SMS feature...

Wirelessly posted

I saved a message in my "Saved Messages" area. I don't understand what the problem is. Just scroll up to the message you want to save in the conversation and select Save.

It looks like you have to open the thread up before you get the save option. But it's definitely there.
