Default EU carrier on US BES

Please Login to Remove!

Is it possible to setup a BES in the US on the same LAN as the mail server but use a EU carrier for the device service? Anything special to do to the BES for this work? I think one migh just need to have the SRP changed from srp.us to srp.eu? Could be way off as well.

thanks!

Yes.

We have customers who have london based BES with devices running in Germany, Russia etc, and other customers with Italian BES's and London based devices. I don't see a need to do anything different in terms of BES configuration but I haven't done your exact example.

Why not get a test unit and give it a whirl on your current BES - you should just be able to Ent. Activate and away it goes.

Your SRP will stay the same as the terrirory which houses the BES:
srp.**.blackberry.net

**EU for Europe, **NA for North America, etc

You won't have any issues with this, we've got a ton of clients on similar configurations, single BES server with multiple carriers and so on.

This problem landed on me today. The user is in London area and the BES server is in NJ, USA. The user has said that there is a different phone for BES users and desktop redirectors. Is there any truth to this?

jrbes: you will be fine, add the user, set a password and EA.

sarcoid: A BlackBerry is BlackBerry is a BlackBerry, your BES will work with any BlackBerry handheld any where in the world on any carrier that supports BlackBerrry.

Not entirely true... in Europe at least you have to make sure you buy a corporate model rather than Consumer. A consumer handset will not work with the BES.

I understand that the handset is the same but it is registered on the RIM network differently.

Also, if you wirelessly activate a European handset, it will look at SRP.EU.blackberry.net rather than the SRP address associated with a US server - I wouldnt be surprised if this causes some issues although I havent any direct experience.

Blackberry devices are not regional in anyway the only differences you will find will be with the service provisioning which is all held on the Blackberry infrastructure. the services simply control which system they can be used with the options are

BlackBerry Infrastructure Codes Description

SRV-00002-003 BlackBerry Prosumer Service
SRV-00002-007 BlackBerry Enterprise Service
SRV-00002-100 BlackBerry Enterprise & Prosumer Service

A prosumer device is one that will work with BIS only enterprise is BES only and then there is the option to be used on both, which seems to be what most devices are provisioned as these days

the enterprise activation just sends an e-mail to the address specified via the infrastructure (aka RIM Relay)

Again, I dont entirely agree. The handset software differs per provider and depending on whether destined for consumer or enterprise.

I have never seen any European prosumer handset work on our BES.

a european prosumer device won't work on a US BES for the same reason a US Prosumer device won't work on a US BES, because it's a prosumer device.

The Prosumer or Enterprise status of a device is set at the network, not on the device itself. There are no functional differences between the handset software. Otherwise I wouldn't be able to log onto the Blackberry Infrastructure everyday and change prosumer devices to enterprise and vice versa with a click of a button. If it was built into the OS they would have to return the device to us while we reflash it everytime.

I have had to do this in London because I use a hosted BES service from Mailstreet in the UK. Hardest part was finding anyone in the O2 sales area who understood that I wanted to buy the Enterprise service, but did not have my own BES. Eventually went to a small CarPhone Warehouse (O2 reseller) called Ecocall who deal with lots of contractors like myself. Got an 8700g with the Enterprise level connection from O2. In the UK this is bundled as 'mobile groupworker' but usually only sold through to large corporate customers.

Just to clarify this in case anyone is still confused. Stern is correct, As long as you have enterprise provisioning you can use your BB on any BES anywhere in the world.

and on any carrier, as the BES has no concern over the network(s).
