Has anyone found any shortcuts for adding/removing layers? Having to actually click on the menu seems so.....last year

OOH! Nevermind, I found the shortcut. Press the 2 key to get the Layers menu up.

Sure you're getting a GPS lock, not just the Google cell triangulation thing? GPS is worldwide (US system) and should show a LOT better than 600m accuracy. Do the govt jam it or something where you are?

the government doesn't jam GPS.. our carriers just never seem to get it right. apparently, GPS does not get 'recognised' if you're in india. when i'm in the UK or dubai or anywhere else, i haven't had a problem at all. accuracy is 3meters.

So you're getting cell accuracy only in India? GPS doesn't require the cellular network to work, but maybe the local operators have service books/policy that gets sent to the BB to kill off its GPS feature

No i'm getting the cell accuracy everywhere else, other than over here in india. which kinda really sucks! i mean does it have to be so hard for vodafone to do something right?

I'm confused now. Cell (triangulation) accuracy will be from a few 100m to over 1000m typically, depending on where the cell towers are compared with your location. 600m (which is what you said you get in India) is typical of what you would get without GPS working, using Google Maps.

With GPS working and locked, you get a few meters accuracy. I don't know how or why GPS could give you a few 100m accuracy these days. Do you know if stand-alone GPS units work ok in India?

The only other thing I've noticed is Google also have/build location data for WiFi access points. If you're in range of one of the ones Google have in their database then the accuracy seems to snap to 100m. My one at home does that, I think after the first time I had a GPS lock when in WiFi range. Google learned its position. Scary and 'big brother' maybe

From what I understand not all of the GPS receivers in the various BB models work in standalone only mode. There are several different modes and each has a different approach to how it obtains location. The ones that require assistance do rely on the carrier network and that could explain the issue at hand.

Hmm. I have a 'location aiding' setting (which I can switch off) in the GPS settings. Maybe it's perm set in some territories and doesn't work...

No, it's not too late to go back. I installed 3.2.0 this morning, and well, I didn't like it. For some reason, it wouldn't do cell tower triangulation, and when it did (to within "2500 metres"), it was to somewhere miles away. Yes, I was indoors in an office building so GPS couldn't kick in, but cell tower triangulation should have at least put me in the neighbourhood like previous versions have.

I rolled back to 3.0.2, which is also not quite as 'hefty' (700k vs 1 MB), here is the URL:

http:/ /m.google.com/maps/download/maps.jad?dc=gorganic&dc=gorganic&ver=3.0.2

I was hoping this new version corrected my issue with my location. It used to be that when I was indoors and no view of the satellites it would show that I'm in London near Hyde Park. Now with version 3.2 it shows that I'm in Fort Collins, CO. The problem is that I am in New Jersey. I am thinking it is a problem between Google Maps and the carrier. For some reason it is not getting the correct info from the local cell tower.

As a frequent Poynt user, the GPS locating faster in GMaps is great. Also the click on a location (may have been there before not sure) to get a real address is very nice.

stand alone gps units do work in india. we have the gps car devices as well now, and they seem to be rather popular. however, i think that it might just be an issue with vodafone carriers...they seem to lag behind terribly on technology, and they are supposed to be the largest cellular service in india. typical.

The map no longer opens or closes as you highlight it. At least on my storm it doesn't.
