Default Initial thoughts on Sprint 9650 Bold

Please Login to Remove!

So far I'm liking 99.99% of the new Bold:
- WiFI is great (dang to apps download fast!)
- Free space is at 320M (WOW!)
- Trackpad is nice improvement over trackball

However, I have found that the space bar doesn't always respond. I type pretty fast on a BB and the space bar can't keep up like the Tour did. I'm hoping that maybe it just needs to be broken in (and isn't just broken) and won't be anything like the initial trackball issues that the 9630 had.

Anyone else notice space bar issues?

Yea, my trackball is tippy, too, but it works fine so I don't miend.

I've been paying more attention when using the space bar so the non-space isn't happening as much.

I sure am diggin the WiFi!

I have a slight dip too. didn't notice it till you said something. Works fine though. My space bar works great too. Maybe try adjusting your keyrate under options - screen/keyboard.

No complaints so far, everything as advertise; trackpad is the same as everyone else's but for me coming from the Storm this sure is device is a pleasure to use.

Coming from my 9630 that had all kinds of trackball issues, and was starting to have them again (on my 3rd trackball), this trackpad is the BOMB! I would have upgraded just for that, but throw in WiFi and double the internal memory and it becomes a no-brainer.

The lower row of keys are slightly more narrow than the 9630's, due I'm sure to the fact that the trackpad takes more room than the trackball and the keys on that upper level (Send, BlackBerry, Escape, and End) are wider. Hasn't slowed me down at all though.

Sometimes I get the feeling that models are released as an interim solution while the "real" model is still under development. Microsoft did it with Windows Longhorn/Vista. It was a placeholder for Windows 7, which is what they should have released in the first place. They get *some* of the features out in a half-assed version that's released way too soon, then finish the product later. IMHO.

My 9650 should arrive on Wednesday. I'll have to take a look at the pad and the space bar issue when it arrives.

I'm so glad to hear about the memory size. Looks like I made a good choice in upgrading my Tour.

(on a side note: shouldn't the 9650 get it's own Device Specific area or can we atleast say 9600 Series Discussion - Bold/Tour?)

I think the general 9600 forum should cover them both. When RIM decided to call the 9650 a "Bold" it was just a marketing thing so early 9630 adopters (like me) weren't honked off that a new model was released so quickly. And also probably to distance themselves from the Tour's bad reputation for the trackball.

I too use to have the 9630 (my wife inherited it).

I find the trackpad much easier and convienant. I just don't like the fact that it's called a bold. Why not call it the 2nd tour? or tour 2? or maybe even something witty like, a new and improved tour?

I agree on the timing issue but I knew from a corporate sales person that they were already working on the trackpad when they released the Tour. I went ahead and got the Tour because of my need to get a new BB every 6 months.

Back on topic:

The space bar works fine and I also have the tip to the right of the track pad... (or maybe it's just an optical illusion)

Coming from my 9700 with AT&T, I kind of miss it, but the 9650 is pretty much on par with the 9700, except slightly bigger.

keeping the network technology set to 1XEV improves battery life drastically compared to the "global" setting.
