Looks like RIM registered the 8100 domain name. blackberry8100.com

I guess further information on the device will be online as soon as they bring the website online.

I don't know what the hell there doing with the Pearl name, it most certainly will be called the 8100 9 out of 10 times.

Same reason they have the Charm and the Electron. And the same reason Microsoft had Memphis, Cairo, Whistler, Longhorn, etc. They're development names.

seems they are trying to appeal to the consumer crowd which seem to love the "name" for phones ie. Razor, Chocolate, etc

I think it is more memorable in a consumer market. Especially if you are not familiar with BlackBerry... Model numbers are easily confused but the BlackBerry Pearl is not
