Cannot create/access BIS account via the web. Why?

I have a BIS account on my BB with Verizon. I'm having numerous issues with that damn default email bug (keeps changing from one account to another regardless of what is set under options- advanced - default services). Anyway, it was recommended that one should log into the BIS web service (vs. the handheld) to adjust this. I've never done this so when I went to vzw.blackberry.net, I went to create an account and entered my PIN and ESN number and I keep receiving an error message that states:
Your account is not accessible via HTML browser. Please use your device to access Blackberry Internet Service.
Anyone have an idea why this happening?

You need to create the BIS account username on the handheld first... then you can access it via web browser on any computer.

Thanks. I haven't done it yet but I found the area to set it up. I'll do it later today.
Just curious. Are there any known advantages to using the BIS web service vs. the handheld? I only want to use it in an effort to straighten out the default email issue I'm having but are there other advantages as well?

Advantages? Maybe. You'll need to see for yourself. I understand you can edit your automatic signature from the blackberry, but can you also create filters? If not, that would be a reason you may need the BIS web page.

I find it a lot easier to use. As aiharkness mentioned, I think the BIS interface via your PC browser has more options but I'm not certain as I never use the Email Setup on the BB itself.

Functionally, there's no difference. You can do the same things in either place.
It comes down to a matter of personal preference.

Depends. I thought it was a BIS function, but I can't edit signature, for example, while VZW users can. I can view, but not edit. I now assume it is something to do with TMO vs VZW.
Maybe users on other carriers can create/edit signature, but I've only read confirmation from BIS users on VZW.
I haven't seen anyone mention they are able to create/edit filters from the blackberry. I can't do it; not even view.

I can edit my signature for each email account and create filters through Sprint BIS but not the phone. Just as you I can only see the signature line on the phone and have limited options.
Personally I think BIS is just easier to use.

Why wouldn't they be able to? BIS is not carrier specific. It's a service provided by RIM.
Every North American wireless carrier uses the same version of BIS.

I don't know. That's why I'm asking. I can't edit signature from the handset. I can't view, much less edit, filters from the handset. Yeah, it's all the same BIS, but the tmobile wap page I access from my blackberry doesn't give me the same capability as you and others have.
I was thinking it is tmobile when I first learned users on other carriers can do it, but a post above says it is the OS. So, I'm wondering. I'm wondering if someone on tmobile with the 9700 can edit signature and filter from the device. That will confirm for me whether it is tmobile or the old OS I'm using that is the difference.

Well, that's your problem. You shouldn't be accessing any web page from the handheld.
BIS is now a thick client on the handheld... an actual app. It's not a web page at all.
If you don't have the BIS client on your handheld, then you probably need to resend your service books to get the client.

Well, that's your problem. You shouldn't be accessing any web page from the handheld.

You assume way too much.
When I click on the manage internet email icon on the device, it opens a tmobile wap page. That's the way it is.
Yeah, it's my problem. But as I say, I'm wondering if it's my problem because of tmobile, or my problem because of the OS.
It seems it's the OS. I'm just looking for a tmobile customer to confirm.

It's the fact that your 8820 is running an older OS. Version 4.6+ has the thick client.

My 9000 also used to open a wap page for BIS when clicking the manage email icon.
