Hoping someone can give me some insight because this one has me stumped.

I have a Japanese executive who wanted a 9700 but needs to type Japanese characters. The problem is that the AT&T firmware versions for the 9700 do not allow typing only reading Japanese characters. So I downloaded the latest firmware from the sticky at the top of this page, stripped the vendor.xml file and upgraded the device.
Everything seemed fine until he came back to me and said that if he composes a message everything is OK, but if he replies to a message the Japanese characters do not work - it is just a garbled mess of characters.

So I wiped the device and reinstalled the firmware - same problem.

I downloaded a different version, used jlcommander to wipe and reset, I even removed and re-added him to the BES for grins - and still I have the same problem.

I know the 9000 can type in Japanese (we have several working with no issues), but he insists on the 9700. Is it possible that AT&T is blocking this or cant support it (which I guess would make sense as to why they stripped it out of their firmware versions)??

My only option if I cant get the firmware to work is namimail, and I dont like that app.
