Software For BlackBerry® Storm 2 (TM) 9550 smartphone
This will install to any carrier's model 9550 by following the instructions below.

BlackBerry Handheld Software v5.0.0.1656 (Multilanguage)

Package Version: 5.0.0.1656
Consisting of:

* Applications: 5.0.0.1015
* Software Platform: 4.2.0.442
* File name: 9550AMEA_PBr5.0.0_rel1656_PL4.2.0.442_A5.0.0.1015. exe
* Updated 11/24/2010

Note: The Software Platform and Applications version numbers can be found under Options-About screen on the handheld.

Download link: http://vzw.smithmicro.com/blackberry...px?ct=personal

Instructions for installing either version on ANY carrier's 9550:

1. Download the above OS file to the PC then install it to the PC by running (double clicking) the file you downloaded.
2. Go to c:\program files\common files\research in motion\apploader and delete the file named "vendor.xml." Vista/Win7 users: In the apploader folder, simply click on "Compatibility files" to see the actual Vendor.xml file. Once you've got that - simply delete the vendor.xml file there (even if you've deleted or think you've deleted it in the folder previously) and voila, it will allow you to update to the newly installed OS!
3. Plug in BB and double click on "Loader.exe." It's located in the same place as the above vendor.xml file.

The process takes about 45 minutes to an hour depending on how much data you have to backup and restore during the process. Once it's done loading the new OS it will reboot (it may do this twice during the entire process.) You will see a white screen with an hourglass for up to 20 minutes at a time while the DM says "waiting for initialization."
If, for some reason, you end up with a white screen with small icons and the number 507, simply connect to the PC again and run Loader.exe again and it should load the OS to the device.

Thumbs down Re: OFFICIAL OS 5.0.0.1015 for 9550 from Verizon

Major problem for me. Address Book disappeared and won't reload. Verizon and RIM tech support haven't been able to solve...but they keep urging me not to downgrade to old version. Quite annoying.

No problems for me. I have been running it since about 10 am this morning. Everything restored like it was before the upgrade. All in all a good upgrade experience. I will feel more comfy after a few days of use.

I downloaded it the other day, had the same problem with my address book. Already downgraded as I did not see any noticeable difference...except when I reboot I get a error msg java lang exception or somewhat. I still get the error on .713???

I had the same problem - no address book and I could not re-load it.
I spent 3 hours on the phone with Verizon support people. No one seemed to have a clue. I went back to .713 and all is well.

No problems here with this OS release, had it running for some time in Beta.
I like it.

Installed this morning. So far, so good. Had a problem with the previous OS rebooting when taking pictures, but not an issue (so far...).

Ok I have now been running this OS for 3 days and I have not had any major showstoppers. Fixed many of my gripes with the original VZW version that came with the device. One thing I am finding is that this device seems to slow down dramatically when BT is open and I am listening to music. I am going to try and figure out if this is something I am doing, but otherwise I am very happy with it.

Go Storm2!

Update...Verizon chose to replace the device which I upgraded last week, as they could not fix the problem. Did the OTA update on the replacement device last night. So far, no problems at all.

And for the Storm2 9550, the OS 6.0 is not supported?

Not yet, and RIM has not mentioned the 9550 in their previous announced of which devices would get the OS 6 upgrades.

Did an OTA upgrade this morning and no issues noted so far. Everything is there and no problems.

Upgraded via Desktop Manager (V 6.0.0.43) yesterday and lost my Address Book too. Tried everything to restore. VERY frustrated. Thankfully I did it on a weekend and not during the work week. Also, I get the java exception error message after a battery pull reboot. Going to downgrade once I figure out how. Also... if it helps, I'm on BIS, and I synch contacts, etc. with Outlook 2003.

I have a friend in CAN who has .1015 on her 9550, but if I recall correctly she loaded the leaked .1015, not this Verizon version. Same difference, though.

UPDATE: I successfully downgraded to .713 via DM. Then I restored the Address Book data bases from the manual backup I did right before I upgraded. Then I synched with Outlook via DM, and all is right in the world again.

Quick survey of sorts:

If you used OTA did you have any problems?

If you used Desktop Manager did you have any problems?
