8310 Gps
Please Login to Remove!
My unit seems to take forever to find satellites. I can't tell if GPS receiver is on all of the time or only when using navigation software like TeleNav. Seems very slow and today in D.C. it lost connection to server even though I had a good signal and it took over 10 minutes before it started working again. The sensitivity of the GPS receiver seems very low compared to SIRF Star III on my Nuvi. Do I have a defective unit? Should I be able to go to Options, Advanced Options, GPS and be able to see readings? I alway seem to show no location, all values = 0.

You should be able to hit menu - refresh at that screen to update the GPS values.
I can say that the GPS reception on mine is a bit disapointing. It does take a while to connect and it is a bit flakey.

Gps
i have only had my 8310 for about a week but I think I got a good one if I discount the battery. I have a lowrance 350 gps so this one was more of a perk however I was very pleased. It took about 20 seconds to find me when I first turned it on. Now it is almost instant to lock onto satellites and give me my location. i just wish it scrolled as you drive off the page.

Most of the gps applications (google maps, telenav, etc) will follow you and scroll the map as you "drive off the page".

I had an 8800 since they initially launched prior to purchasing the 8310.
I will say that I have noticed it being slower than what I was accustomed to with the 8800 at start up. There are times when it won't even pick up a satellite in places where it was never a problem before. But, for the most part, the gps functions great. I use it all the time. I am in Vegas this week and have used it every day. Yes, slower than what I would like at start up, but after that, it works great.

Is the scrolling a setting. I downloaded Google and it all seems to be fine except it does not scroll. I just drive off the page and am gone.

dunk, if you set directions to a location, it will follow you automatically as you drive to that location. It is automatic.

yes mine seems to be picky about reception also - not too good but its ok.
Question - does the route get downloaded and saved to device before you start or does it get downloaded as you drive? Reason I ask is that some of the routes I take have bad radio reception and would hate if it cut off on me on the way to location.

I also must have received a good one. Driving in the car I can open google maps, and the gps locks within 5 secs.

JS I know what you are saying. I have a gps in my car and boat. I downloaded Google maps and it said all was well, download successful. It seems to work fine but does not scroll. I think I will try to download again and try it then.

I actually couldnt get GMaps to locate my locale via GPS. Pulled battery a few times and nothing. I prefer Tele Nav interface anyway.
Cheers

In Google Maps, if you press '0' (zero) it should locate you and center you on the map, update your location. I have not used GM in a couple months and had to ask someone.
Yes, TeleNav works better for me as well.

Download
OK, I deleted Google and then download it again. I just went for a ride and it works find. it scrolls as it should albeit a little slow. I do like the feature where you can select map view or satellite view. It's different driving by the gold course, shopping center and seeing that you are in fact next to the building on the photo / satellite image. I would like to also try Tele-nav. Would it interfere with Google. i guess the question is can I have them both installed and just select which one I want to use. can someone post the url for tele nav

Yes, you can use TeleNav. I don't think you can use them both with GPS at the same time but I have both installed and use both of them for different things.

I've tried that and it doesn't work for me. I'l have to try deleting and re-installing Google Maps and see if that helps.

Ok, someone with more experience can perhaps help all of us. I don't know how far ahead TeleNav loads maps and stores them on the handheld. With traffic re-routing I have found several times in the D.C. area that when it goes to check and says traffic ahead calculating new route it tries to go to the server to download new info. In the meantime it blanks the screen as it is trying to load the new map data and you wind up with a server error, retry option. This can occur for some time (minutes) where you are driving blind with no clue whether to continue or what. I show good signal strength though I am in D.C. Could it be that it was rush hour and the server was overloaded with requests? If this is the case, TeleNav needs to increase the server capacity. I have seen this happen on more than one occasion. If it is on the AT&T side, they need to fix it and if it is on the BlackBerry server side, they need to fix this. I hope someone comes out with a way to load the maps for the U.S. on the micro SD and makes it more useful. When it works it is really great.
Other than this glitch, the 8310 is the best BlackBerry I have used because it has the best phone of any BlackBerry. I have seen other post that they can't tell any difference in phone quality between the 8700 and the 8310 but this does not even come close to matching my experience.
