Why was the shortcut key for the alarm removed in 9700 OS 5.x?

Is there a way to get this back or an app to set it?

Nope. When RIM removed it from the operating system there is no going back. At least not until RIM brings it back themselves.

Ahh, i suppose there is no way to make a clock shortcut either without using convenience keys?

Don't know if this would be a work around for you or not. But you could use L to open calendar, then select new alarm from the menu, etc.
