What if you pay Bongo Wireless to unlock one of the units and see if you can scoop the unlock code that way, pending they don't use a hardware flashing solution?

Another thought would be checking with on one of the TMo user on the board who are in good standing with TMo. From what I hear TMo will provide an unlock if your in good standings...

I'd be willing to bet he'll need 5000 separate unlock codes...

That's a lotta time on the phone getting codes.. :(

Yep, thats going to be tough, might have to work something out with a third party company that does unlocking? ATT won't provide an unlock under and circumstance...

5000 is a whopping amount.

How about seeing if Bongo will provide a big discount for that quantity?

Good call Mark, that just might be the route to go. Guess if you are looking to unlock that sort of quantity I would do so now, rumor has it carriers have started cracking down on the practices of such services.

That is what I'd like to know too...

Either they have an "insider" at a telco or they got their hands on the algorith m for unlocking...

To be honest, I think it's software unlocked. I'm not 100% sure, if I remember correctly according to hofo that's how most places do it.

I'm not sure I'm understanding what "software unlock" means, because my Nokia DCT4 handsets didn't require any hardware, I just downloaded a free calculator from the Internet and whipped up my own unlock codes.

Actually, I've unlocked a lot of Nokias using freeware that generates the codes.

My Sony Ericsson T610 on the other hand had to be hooked up to a Star Trek Tricorder to be unlocked. That was the last time I bought a locked handset. It's stupid. Though now I'm doing it again with a BlackBerry.

At least T-Mobile will unlock it.

There is no big secret how RIM locks their devices. They do it the same as any other manufacturer does and unlocking is no different as well.

Fortunate for RIM, every code is not the same for each BB. We can unlock most BB's from any carrier but some network insiders can get you the codes for free. T-Mobile seems the most lax whereas AT&T seem the very strict on giving out codes for their devices.
