eMails arrive already open in BB 8330

One of many users receives emails already opened into his BB and therefore the BB does not advise that he has received a new email. We use Lotus Domino/Notes and a BES server.
I checked his Lotus Notes and the emails have not been opened therefore it is something happening between the BES and his handheld.
Could it be a setting in the BlackBerry?
Could it be a setting in the BES?
I'm not aware of a setting that would instruct the email to arrive as oppnened.
