Default Latest OS: 9550 5.0.0.1206/5.0.0.713 (Multilanguage)

Please Login to Remove!

Software For BlackBerry® Storm 2 9550
BlackBerry Handheld Software v5.0.0.1206 (Multilanguage)

Package Version: 5.0.0.1206
Consisting of:
  • Applications: 5.0.0.713
  • Software Platform: 4.2.0.323
  • File name: 9550AMEA_PBr5.0.0_rel1206_PL4.2.0.323_A5.0.0.713_T BayTel_.exe
  • File size: 114.01MB

Note: The Software Platform and Applications version numbers can be found under Options-About screen on the handheld.

Download the OS here: https://www.blackberry.com/Downloads...4E334A9033D349

Instructions for installing either version on ANY carrier's 9550:

1. Download the above OS file to the PC then install it to the PC by running (double clicking) the file you downloaded.
2. Go to c:\program files\common files\research in motion\apploader and delete the file named "vendor.xml." Vista/Win7 users: In the apploader folder, simply click on "Compatibility files" to see the actual Vendor.xml file. Once you've got that - simply delete the vendor.xml file there (even if you've deleted or think you've deleted it in the folder previously) and voila, it will allow you to update to the newly installed OS!
3. Plug in BB and double click on "Loader.exe." It's located in the same place as the above vendor.xml file.

The process takes about 45 minutes to an hour depending on how much data you have to backup and restore during the process. Once it's done loading the new OS it will reboot (it may do this twice during the entire process.) You will see a white screen with an hourglass for up to 20 minutes at a time while the DM says "waiting for initialization."
If, for some reason, you end up with a white screen with small icons and the number 507, simply connect to the PC again and run Loader.exe again and it should load the OS to the device.

What is faster? Data, or just general usability?

I kinda like the landscape mode text hints being landscape now as well. I have no issues with the upgrade against Verizon Wireless at this point. I also note that the load time appeared faster, and hassle free compare to my 9630 upgrade experiences.

I could not perform wireless activation on this version and activating by desktop lead to issues where mail was not being sent or received. Going back to the version I was using.

Installed this morning... so far an excellent update. Noticeably faster when scrolling and screen transitions.

I've noticed the following:
  • Moving from app to app is faster
  • Fewer 3rd party app settings were lost
  • Finds and holds onto my default wi-fi network much better
  • Maybe imagining this, but incoming e-mail vibration notification is shorter (*** vs. *********)
  • App World doesn't show my downloads. But, I updated App World a day or two ahead of this, so maybe that's the culprit

You know how to have those downloads show?

Open App World > MyWorld
Press Menu > Show keyboard
Press the NUMlock key.

Type 34(

You may notice a lag or lock on the device a minute and the device should return normal and show the previous downloads, or do a battery pull reboot if it does not.

Paid apps will require the PayPal account to be reentered.

JSanders,

Thanks, that took care of it. What does the keystroke combo tell the BB to do? Is it like a browser hard refresh?

Yea, sorta. I think its more like it forces your PIN to be recognized to the AppWorld servers.

For paid apps, you'll still need to enter your PayPal info.

Thanks. No worries when it comes to PayPal. I'm a Luddite and don't have an account

Working well for me.

I sometimes wonder if it just feels faster because it's a fresh load and not as much because of the update itself.

One oddity I'm seeing with it is when searching messages. It doesn't show "searching" or "search complete" or anything to let me know it's either searching or finished. If recall a saved search, it won't display the search name at the top as it did before.

Very annoying. I'm never sure if it's not quite done and I should be more patient - which is not in my nature.
