I just got my new BB8700g today. The phone portion is working great, but I have no idea how to set up the internet/email portion. The BB is brand new, but did not come with a book. I downloaded the book from a link on this website, and the first thing I read is about Enterprise Activation. I have read several threads about BES. I know what the acronym stands for, but I have no idea what it means to me. Do I have to have some kind of account, aside from the high speed service from my cell provider? I'm very frustrated. I have a gmail account. How do I get my BB to connect to it?

Unless you are associated with a business running a BES, you most likely should be looking for a BIS setup. Search on the forum here on BIS

On your BB - do you have an icon for "personal email setup"? If so - follow that link and you will be walked through setting up the BIS portion of it.

well first off do you have a Blackberry data plan?

BES is typically a corporate thing though you ban pay for BES services for personal use Im not 100% certain of the benefits nother than wireless reconciliation

BIS is for the general user. That can be set up from handheld or you service providers (can't think of term)

No, there is not "personal email setup" icon. But my BB is not recognizing my wireless network in my home, for some reason. Maybe a setting in my router? My router does require a password to connect to the network, so people outside of my home can not connect...???

an 8700 is a Cellular device not a 802.11 device - you will not be able to use the wireless (802.11x) network in your house.
Call your provider and make sure you have a "BlackBerry Data Plan". Yes it costs extra...

And I don't know if it matters, but my phone is T-Mobile.

If you don't have a "BlackBerry data plan" then you can not receive email or browse the web on the device. It is basically a cell phone with some PDA features... You could sync it to your computer, but it would not have the push technology for emails.

Not trying to be rude - but why did you purchase the 8700?

this could just be a wording confusion... If you have an "internet" plan on it - it very well could be the BB data plan already. Just call and confirm with them.

The company that I work for wanted me to have a "smartphone". They left it up to me to decide which one to buy. I did some research and decided on the 8700. Blackberry's are supposed to be very good. I actually bought it from a fella on this forum. He said it is "unlocked", and will work with any carrier. I had no idea that the email and internet "might" not work.

The dataplan will cover data use only. You will still need your cell plan too.

My specific carrier does not sell Blackberries. But they did give me a loaner phone to try out. I could access the net with it. And I am paying for internet service on my account.

Didn't you say you were with T Mobile? They do have Blackberries btw.

connect to what? you will still need to setup the BIS (basically a conduit for your personal email account ie: gmail and your BB)

The data plan will just enable it - not do it for you....

think he said the phone was originally from T-Mobile - but it is unlocked so will work with any GSM SIM card.

My carrier is i wireless. They are a local affiliate of T-Mobile. Do you think I could still just call T-Mobile?

just looked at their homepage - they don't mention BB's on their plans page or even sell BB's - you may be out of luck...
