I've had my Blackberry Bold for a week now. The battery life is great when using 3G or Edge but when I connect via Wi-Fi you can watch the bars disappear completely within 4 hours. This just isn't right. Does anyone have a solution?
It shouldn't be that bad. I leave my Bold's on wifi all day and it is connected all day to the wifi router at the office....... and I easily get through the day (not night) with moderate usage. This was the case with .167 as well as .190 loaded.
It depends on how much signal strength you have for both carrier and WiFi.
If it keeps searching for carrier, it's going to eat up battery doing those searches.
If the carrier and WiFi are weak, it's going to adjust its transmit power to compensate.
If you keep GPS & Bluetooth turned on, keep using the handset for mail or browsing or streaming or media playing, etc., you're also poking more holes into the bottom of its box of juice.
I went back to the ATT store today and they changed out the battery. Looks like it is performing better now. I will run a test in the morning and let everyone know how long a this new fully charged battery works with Wi-Fi on.

I'm having the opposite experience. Having my Bold connected to WiFi while at work and home has shown an increase in battery life vs. just using 3G all the time.
Complicated determination.
3G without question drains battery fastest.
2G (only) w/WiFi on 24/7 better than a day is good for me.
- wonder if WiFi (strong) is more efficient tha 2G fluxuating.
So many variables and complexity of the radios.
Perhaps the real question is 'What is acceptable'.
I have had my bold from day 1 from at&t and I have already killed 1 battery took me less than 3 months my usage is at 8:30 unplug phone go to gym uses moto s9 for 1 hr then come home go to work and plug phone back in at 1 am I get about 10-15 emails a day and 15-20 text and bb messenger has 2 conversations running all day with about 30-40 reply's and I get a low bat on my way home love the phone but could use more battery in my eyes
when i first got my bold and had original .167 operating system, i too noticed fast battery drain when using wi-fi. now things are much better since one of my firm's techs helped me upgrade to the newer .216 operating system
The Battery life of the Bold is very dependant on its ability to be 'connected'.
It wants to be connected - no, it Needs to be connected.
Various radios give multiple connection points and all require power.
Some are more efficient than others as well as providing different access.
What is most problematic is the 3G/2G/Wifi management.
The Bold does an amazing job with that complexity when allowed to but...
Vendors Code the devices to function 'optimally' within their networks, not necessarily utilizing the capacity of the device.
ATT will tell the story of 'Rims first 3G device' and ATT tech will say ' an executive decision was made' - yeah right.
The bottom line is ATT has severely depreciated the Bold with their 'executive decision' to eliminate user network options.
End result may be poor battery life ,dropped voice calls, system resets when the device can't resolve network switching.
Who knows what the long term logic from ATT is but I imagine the short term solution may be to provide 2nd batteries with new purchases.
