Ok so I may be a moron..but I can't seem to clear my message indicator in the upper left corner of my screen...I've checked all of my email accounts that I have assigned to my blackberry, checked all voicemails, checked the sms and mms messages but i still have 20 messages showing...can someone help an idiot out....?

Welcome to the forums!

You can try 2 things:
1 - Remove/reinsert your battery. A hard reboot usually clears odd stuff like that.
2 - Go into the Messages app, press T to go to the top of the list, click the wheel and click 'Mark Prior Opened'.

Have you looked at saved messages, to see if you have some in there unopened?

Messages > View Folder > View Saved.
