Vodafone tell me I can have a Bold on their normal tariff, which comes with internet access, as I have no need for push email (I'm happy to collect them via webmail when needed), therefore wouldn't need to pay them an extra £5 a month for the BB email service.

But, when I talked about GPS use, they said I would need the BB service for that, as they were connected in some way.

Is that right? Would that be for the assisted part of GPS, or for the BB maps (or both)? And, in either case, would I still be able to use it with purchased maps and native GPS without subscribing?

You will need a Data Plan for most GPS mapping apps to send the mapping data to the BlackBerry. The GPS sees the satellites without the Data plan, and you can get your lat and long that way.

No, they say I need the BB subscription as well as my data plan. That's to use 'Vodafone Find & Go' (what a catchy title....).

I'm not sure what stops me downloading maps and using the native GPS without Vodafone's help.

How is the BB "subscription" separate from your data plan? In the US at least, your BB data plan includes email/data/internet/etc.
