Default Build quality going downhill?

Please Login to Remove!

So I'm wondering if we're watching RIM's slow decay now affect the quality of their products.

Being that they now manufacture devices outside of Canada, is there starting be be a quality issue?

Both my boss and I have 9900's and his came just a little while after mine.

3 weeks ago mine literally died (with about 30% battery left) and never came back on. I had Rogers replace it.

Now my boss had his phone at 3% (according to the BES) and it was off, we thought he was charging it and now it wont turn back on. It will detect in Windows but when I look at the Device Manager it shows as a connected Blackberry with no PIN eg Blackberry(0)

So this is two Bold 9900's that have just died, for no reason.

Any thoughts?

Seems to be an issue with some of the 99xx's from everything I've read. I don't know if it's a build quality issue or an OS issue that they haven't yet been able to nail down - more likely IMO. This isn't unique to the 99xx though. I have a 9800 that has the exact same issues and have seen a few older units with the same problem.

I am not seeing or reading anything out of the ordinary or unexpected. All devices have problems, just look at the latest iPhone 4s and some of the HTC devices and almost every other new model. They all have birthing and rowing problems. Even Google has software problems.

Keep in mind, you generally only hear the bad, never the good.

Exactly. Well said Dub!! Very few come here to proclaim that their device is running fine.

My 9900 is doing just fine.

I have heard of some early-release batteries being defective. Not sure what else to say. My device feels solid and is holding up well. Battery life is not really the best but nothing that a car charger can't take care of.

Yeah, battery going bad and not charging can happen. I'm a little surprised that both of our 9900's died, literally won't power on anymore and not because of the battery.

He got his over a month after me and even had to wait due to low inventory, which I would think means they were manufactured a little while apart.

My replacement has been doing fine just as my old one was, right up until the very moment it died in my hands.

I guess every now and again you get your turn with the defect (I know all about that, I used to own a computer store) I've just never had a seemingly pure hardware issue (or one incredibly nasty software bug that only I somehow seemed to trigger) with any of my BB's to date.

Though if you're familiar with my wacky PB issues, that rebuffs my thoughts that somehow there's a build quality issue starting to show. I hope not

Only had a slight 102 error (my fault) but other than that, my 9900 works far better than my 9780 used to. I can get a full day's use out of it at work, and that's all I ask. The rest is a bonus. No complaints on actual build quality. No squeaks, everything looks good.

Did you restore a previous non-OS7 phone when you got the 9900? I am a firm believer that restoring old phones (and old software, settings, etc.) is not the way to go.

Nope, when I got the 9900 I wiped and installed the latest available OS and started 'fresh'

Our BES saves preferences so most of my settings (fonts, background, 'soft settings') came back immediately.

Aside from that, I re-install all programs fresh.

And it was sudden, the phone died after having it for just over a month.

How did you cause the 102 error?

I came up with it after doing a double soft reset. The podcasts icon was showing when doing Switch Application, even though the podcasts app had been exited. I was able to reload the OS, but it gave me a scare. Haven't had that happen before. No problems since and I'm running same as I was before.

We're on both BESX and BES. I have 15 or so users on BB and most are on the 9900's. We have basically stripped out all non-essential modules, like games, social feeds, podcasts, langauges, Slacker radio, etc...and allow only one or two third party apps (Poynt /XE.com). Aside from the not-so-great battery life on the devices (including two I use personally), we have not had any load errors, java errors or dead BB's, not even once. I have to wonder if it has something to do with some built-in RIM apps, like any one of the ones I've removed on all the devices.
