Default Disabling Emergency Call

Please Login to Remove!

Heya,

The IT policy I have setup locks blackberrys when cradled, somehow this has caused the users a bunch of grief, and sometimes accidently making the Emergency Call.

(In reality I think they are doing it because they hate unlocking the blackberry)

So, is there some way to disable that Emergency Call button, or make that Emergency Call go somewhere other than 911?

Seeing how if by chance you hit the emerency call button, a pop-up comes up asking if they really want to make one. Sounds like their just complaining to complain or using it with their eyes shut. I seriously doubt that they would have a way to disable that option...not positive though.

Yeah, just got off the phone with RIM, and the service providor, and they both say its a saftey feature, and that it has to be there.

But yeah, there is honestly no way I can see accidently getting connected to 911.

How possible is it to press in the wheel, scroll it down once, press it in, scroll it up once, and then press it in again.

Im not that good with math, but I bet the chances are low

Never seen it happen here. I think legally they are obligated to allow easy access to 911.

Looks like your users need training - especially to put their blackberry in the holster when not in use. This not only stops errant key presses but also saves power on the device by switching the screen off.

Yup - for safety and legal reasons, country specidfic emergency numbers cannot be blocked.

The question is what kind of holster are they using? OEM Plastic, OEM Leather or something else?

What is your lock timeout set to? Immediate?

Would you consider at least making it 5 minutes or something? To me it looks like overzealous administration is 51% the blame.

we have IT Security policy with 15 min lockout, 90users, and so far have had about 5 accidental emergency calls. The unlock/emergency call/cancel window comes up when you roll or click the trackwheel in lock mode, not when you press the keys, so the plastic holster doesn't really prevent accidental calls. the only thing that works is wireless off, power off, or a full body holster which are not standard issue. Usual culprit is the BB in the pocket... We just have to tell the users to be careful, and it's their problem if they call 911 by accident.

I wish there was a way to disable it, or at least change it to 9 for emergencies like some of the other phones. I have called 911 three times now while the phone was in my pocket. Now I need a track wheel lock.

this option should be re-designed and/or require a user confirmation.

It DOES require a confirmation. My guess is these users can't read.

In our environment, we enable lockout after 60min. This seems to satisfy everyone who uses the device. No accidentally dialled 911 calls... yet.

My 4 year old accidentaly dialled 911 on mkine several times while I was sleeping. He didn't know what he was doing, just pressing buttons while it was locked. (yes, I know, I should store it where he can't get it)

So, is there any way to diable the feature when locked?

Thnaks.
