Arrow Moving BAS - question

Please Login to Remove!

Having installed the BAS on the BES (in HA mode), there is now a request for me to move the BAS to a seperate server. Does anybody have instructions on how to do this successfully? BES v5.0.1, Exchange 2003.

I suspect it is as simple as installing BAS on the seperate server, but do I have to uninstall BAS on the original BES machines, or can I just disable the services?

I did this a few weeks ago on a test box. Wanted to move my BAS to another machine to off load the BES5.0. These are what I did:-

(1) Run the BES 5.0 setup.exe and uncheck BAS
(2) Run the BES 5.0 setup.exe in the new machine & check BAS
(3) Point database to the existing BESMgmt database
(4) Update the BlackBerry Server Configuration on the BES with the new pool name
(5) Update the "Program Files > Research In Motion > BAS" shortcut properties to the url file and reflect the new pool
(6) Lastly, use the new BAS console to remove the old BAS instance.

Here's the wierd thing.
Had a DNS round robin set up for the two BES servers. When trying to connect to https://dns-round-robin/webconsole/login, the login process takes 3 minutes exactly, from time of hitting the login button (after typing credentials). This is the reason for moving the BAS off to another server.

Disabled BAS services on the primary bes (say BES01), just playing around before uninstalling, and now the damn BAS login works normally, without 3 minute delay. Seems the BAS is somehow attached to BES02 (the normal standby server) and attempts to connect to that first, when it fails, it tries BES01. Any idea if the JBOSS binds to a specific IP address and how to change it?

For my setup, it is customized such that:-

(1) Machine A
- BAS only
- has its own pool name

(2) Machine B
- Primary BES
- Core BES services

(3) Machine C
- Standby BES
- Core BES services

Machine B and C has their own pool name.

My aim is simple, leave BES server to service as what it should be - i.e. as a BES server. To me, BAS is a web client to configure these servers, hence I place it on a remote machine.

My login works immediate. Hope this helps.

noname, are you saying you have bas installed on all 3 machines? I don't understand what you mean by B and C have ther own pool name??? Pool name is related to BAS. If you don't have BAS installed on all three, why the need of a separate pool name for the other two?

Brendan42, what browser are you using to hit the BAS URL? Does it do the same thing with IE and FF? Also, when you do an nslookup external to the two machines, does it return both IP addresses from the Pool?

Lastly, does either machine have two nics? If so, check the bind order of the nics in the advanced menu on the Network adapter controll panel. Make sure the primary nic is first in the bind order.

Oops, my bad, besadmin23. Machine B and C has their own server name. Yeah pool name is for BAS.

Tried it using both IE and FF, same result. Nslookup gives both IP addresses of primary BES and standby. Both machines are VMWare machines, only 1 NIC.

Hhmm, you've got me thinking besadmin23. Are you suspect of VMWare implementation of UDP through the virtual switch? Will have a look and let you know. Going to feel stupid if it is as I've skipped the TCP setting thinking they're on the same subnet anyway...more to follow

Last ditch attempt, I tried RIM's advice about using TCPPING instead of UDP, went through and completed their steps faultlessly. No solution as the page doesn't even load now, so cannot login. Went back to the previous settings and now I can access the BAS page using the direct links, but not using the DNS-round-robin name
ie. https://bes-server-1/webconsole/app works while BES-1 is the primary. But https://DNS-RR/webconsole/app doesn't, nor does https://bes-server-2/webconsole/app. At this point, my patience level (which is normally abundant) is nearing it's limit...

Going to try to change the jboss bind address next. In the words of a well-known advert, "What's the worst that could happen?"
