Default bold ota updates

Please Login to Remove!

about a week ago, while talking with at&t tech support on an unrelated issue, the person told me that in order to get over the air updates later, i needed to turn my bold off and on periodically. i told him i never saw anything like that in the user guide, but he said it's necessary. i wondered if any of the experts on this forum thought that sounds right

on a related note, i have not been turning my bold off. when i do so using the red Turn Power Off icon, and then power back on later, i do not see the bold going through all the verifying security software etc; instead, it seems to just come right back on. assuming it is right at all that i need to really power off the bold occasionally to get over the air updates (whenever they might come), it seems like i would need to do more. does anyone know best practice for doing so?

sorry if these are dumb questions. thx

turning the device off and on won't create a wireless upgrade/update to the OS. It might install some service book.

I would beg to differ. Every time you reset your device it needs to reconnect with a tower. It will do all the startup routines that it should do. Just like your computer some applications are smart enough to check all the time others will only check when your machine first boots up.

I have my automatic shutdown startup on to go off at 4:00 AM then back on at 4:05 AM. This helps a lot with tower problems and poor reception. I was told that some towers could have problems and buy turning it off them back on will find different towers and chose the strongest. If your tower was having issues you would continue to use it getting poor reception...

Just my 2 cents..

You are on a different subject. Read the OP again. This is about OTA updates, i thought.

You are correct thought about reconnecting to the tower, solving communication issues, etc. How do I reset my BlackBerry? - BlackBerryFAQ

thanks for the helpful responses and particularly the reset link. this raises one more ignorant question i had:

when i pull battery from the bold, the back cover leans out but does not come completely off. i have not forced the back cover completely off. is the back cover supposed to come completely off, or just hang open while one does a battery pull reset

PS INTERESTINGLY, while i think i'm autosubscribed for this thread, i have not received usual email messages advising me of the helpful posts above. wonder if some sort of site issue this morning. usually those email messages / notices come right away!

thx again

The back cover will come off completely (interestingly enough is that mine is way to loose, but no real complaints). Does yours appear hinged at the bottom or top?

For this thread subscribe issue, while in this thread, go to thread tools at the top and click on UNsubscribe from this thread, and when that is completed, go back to thread tools and subscribe again and choose instant notification by email.

thanks. i don't see any hinge down there (and my back cover also seemed to get a little looser after first time i pried it partially open) but i haven't yet had the nerve to force cover all the way off at the bottom, where it pivots to about 30 degrees open

ps, thanks for the un-then-re-subscribe suggestion. done

To get the battery cover off you need to press the little button on the bottom. That releases the catch. You are supposed to do that first and then the battery cover comes off easily.

CAN you describe how exactly you set the bold to automatically power cycle every morning between 4 and 4:05? that sounds like a great idea and i'd like to try. thx

just curious, what would happen to the bold if the user did not update the OS regularly
