External Memory - What is it used for?
Please Login to Remove!
Hi all,
Besides Photos/Videos/Music... what is the external memory used form?
I undertsand Mini Monitor can log to the SD card, but can any other applications take advantage of the external memory?
Thanks!

thats it... some apps will record info to the SD card... like MSN for example, if you have chat logging on, it will save to the SD card... you cannot store Apps to the card, or anything related to the BB OS and Apps

Oh hmmm... Too bad apps can't be loaded onto the card.
Does anyone actually use the BB as an MP3/Video player?

All the time. I use an FM transmitter for my car and play MP3s from my BB through my car stereo.

can you use the voice recorder and save to the SD card? I'm thinking if possible to record some lectures approx 4 hours long... I'm waiting on and 8GB SDHC I got for about $19!

Why is it too bad? With a gig of onboard memory, you're never really going to run out of space for applications provided that you keep the music/videos/pictures on the SD card.
Like what's your reason for wanting to put apps on the SD vs the memory ?

IIRC there's 128Mb of RAM/flash for apps. But someone correct me if I'm wrong. If I have 8GB of storage, I could store more apps on it then 1GB would hold.

No, you're mistaken. Apps cannot be saved to the internal 1GB either. They are stored in the 128MB device memory. The internal 1GB is used for the same thing as the SD card.

You cannot store apps on anything except the 128MB internal device memory.

AFAIK, there is 128MB of Memory for Apps + 1GB of storage space. Unfortunately the stock OS + Apps already used like 70 - 80 MB, leaving only ~40MB free?
Also, onboard databases like messages, etc, I think it uses the 128MB not the 1GB.

Seems like it would have been smarter for ATT to allow the 1 gb for apps and then include a media card to store all music, pics, etc. With the current setup, the 128 MB can get used up rather quickly installing apps (especially with the memory leaks), the pics and music are stored on the memory card, and the 1 GB sits there unused.

If Blackberry does rewrite the software, then we will have to wait for an update from them, and till that time, we are stuck with 128MB. The good part is that the device does not seem to slow down, which is a good thing, unlike WinMo devices.
You just have to watch closely what apps/games you install as they will default to the internal 128MMB memory. The SD card (and device memory of 1GB) are for other stuff like music, movies, photos, ms office files, notes. This part is useful as you can carry additional files without carrying additional cards/hardware.

Corey, what type cable are you using for this purpose? I have an Aux jack in my car that I'd like to hook to.

I use mine as an MP3 player. Usually i take it to work and have it play through the speaker so I can hear it because i can't use headphones at work. Doesn't really drain my batter a whole lot either.
I have a 4GB micro SD card thats in my BB right now, how much bigger of a card could I get that would still work in the BB?

@damaged7
From what I've read, you cna use up to 32GB micro sdhc, though the card itself will be too pricey. A good price point right now is the 8gb card, and in some cases if you get lucky, you may get the 16gb at a fair price. My usual guide is £1 = 1GB, and since the sterling isn't that great anymore as opposed to the $, then perhaps you can use that principle as your guide to, i.e. $1 = 1GB.
@ipos
Agree, I've just followed a thread from one of the mods on how to reinstall the OS, and was able to claim back a substantial amount by not installing other languages other than english, removing a couple of games I know I will not play (having tried and not liked them), and removing a few apps as well.
