So I was looking at AT&T's tethering guide (attached).

It says:

"Ensure you have a BlackBerry service plan with tethering capability."

Does this mean it's not good enough to have an unlimited data plan? Is a "tethering plan" a unique line item to get more money our of our pockets?

AT&T wants you to believe so. I DO NOT have a 'Tethering Plan' from AT&T and I'm able to tether with no issues what-so-ever.

A number of years ago, back when the 8700c first shipped, I switched to it just for the ability to tether via EDGE speed. Our AT&T account manager at the time said "Oh, no problem, as long as you have 'unlimited data' with your BlackBerry service, that includes tethering."

The next month, our corporate bill arrived and our business manager asked me, "Um, why were your AT&T charges $1200 last month?" Turns out that yes, tethering worked fine, it's just that every bit of transferred data had a cost. That $1200 was just for one week of heavy tethering usage while I was out of town. Our AT&T account manager credited us the $1200 because he had told me the wrong thing, so that part worked out in the end, and we had to go ahead and add the 'tethering' option to my line: $30 per month.

It would take very little effort to see what you are connecting from. One packet sniff and you will be screwed.

I pay for the tethering, personally.

It has always been possible to tether as long as you have had a media net unlimited package or higher on ur phone, however its not a particularly good idea if you like having an account with ATT. Recently ATT has been alot more interested in data figures and has been investigating accounts without the proper features, in some events i have seen enormous bills, in other TERMINATION of account. Tethering without a plan can lead to the cancellation of your service, so do so at your own risk

AT&T charges me $20.00 a month for tethering on my unlimited blakberry plan. I wonder why they are different?
