So my phone was stolen a two months ago and I just noticed the other day one of the screen names that I used on AIM (ramble) is online all the time. Is there any way I could track them and get the phone back or at least get them in some kind of legal trouble. Cingular was no help when it got stolen. message me and I'll give you the screen name. If it was stolen, when you called Cingular, they should've fried the PIN from afar.

I contacted cingular and they couldn't help me. I also filed a police report and that didn't get anywhere. I've been using a motorola can and string phone and would love to get my blackberry back but I'd rather just catch the guy.

Call cingular and tell them the Bb was stolen and give them the PIN / IMEI number. You should have that somewhere from the old documentation. It is on the phone, however, which you don't obviously have.

Cingular "should" block the PIN from further use. They won't track it, they really could care less where it is. But IF they have you as owner of record of the PIN, and you tell them it is lost or stolen, they should block it from further use. Therefore the BB will be dead for intents and purposes. I believe a user could still use the phone and SMS with their own SIM card. You might as Cingular about the SIM as well.

ya they (cingy) can zap it and virtually make the device useless except general phonecalls and sms at most

I contacted cingular and they said that the phone wouldn't be able to be used anyway because it was under the old At&t and they wouldn't be able to activate it for that reason but I'm looking at it being online through my aim. Should I just keep texting the guy till his head explodes or till he figures out how to turn off ramble?

Cingular is giving you Bull. Did you directly ask them to BLOCK YOUR PIN since it is a stolen or lost BB? You need to tell them what YOU want done, not listen to their bull.

Let me ask, have YOU canceled your BIS account with them? If your account is still active... then you would know and could look at the billing and see what data usage is occurring. Since you are using a BB now, as stated in first post, cancel your account and get the jerk off the device.

As far as the "thief" or whoever using your AIM screen name, just go change your password, and they can't sign on any longer.

I don't understand why you sit there and watch somebody on your account, when all you have to do is change the password, and bang, he's off.

I have a feeling that you're the one in possession of a stolen blackberry, and you're testing the waters by asking questions about Cingular's ability to track the device.
I think any normal individual would have had the phone locked down and reported stolen to the carrier the moment they noticed it was gone.
You waited two months, and now you're considering bombarding the buy with text messages? Absurd.
Something is fishy, and you're not telling us the whole (or truthful) story.

I reported the phone stolen the moment it was gone. I went to the cingular booth in the mall (where I work) and reported it stolen then I went about canceling it. I bought one of those pay as you go phones and because I had them cancel my sim and the guy at the booth gave me a new sim card so I could use my old number (it's my business phone). I was using a couple of different screen names when I had my blackberry and I noticed that one of the names I used when I had the blackberry had the phone device next to it and I kept sending it messages till someone replied. I can change the password on the screen name at anytime I didn't know if there was anything I could do. I still have the box like I said earlier and it has all the info on the side like IMEI/PIN. Didn't know if there was any way I could get the guy like using skyhook or something. Thanks everyone for the help so far.

You've been given good advice on what to do, and have chosen not to (canceling the PIN, closing the BIS Account, dropping the BB Data Plan, changing the AIM password. So yea, just bombard him with IMs, he will block your Screenname, and then what? Will that make you happy?
Just do as suggested.

Inform Cingular, if they dont help inform RIM. They can send a kill command and erase the data and block the PIN from the relay.

Result = very upset thief.

Ok... Why hasn't Cingular killed the SIM? You've had your phone missing for 2 months and Cingular never suspended service on it??

I'm not so sure you can just ask Cingular (whatever provider) or RIM to brick your phone or remove some capabilities like BIS or MMS. I mean, who is to say the phone was really stolen (other than maybe a police report)? You could have lost the phone, you can sell phones on ebay, in person, or even give them to your friend -- do you really think that just because you are the original owner you have all final rights to the phone?

Its a nice thought, but I doubt anything more than canceling the account will come of all those calls to Cingular / RIM.

Unless the device is on a BES, RIM can't help you with killing the device. Even if it is on a BES, they can just instruct the Admin on how-to use the "Kill Handheld" feature. If your device is stolen, contact your carrier and they will kill the SIM or IMEI.
