I have two exchange servers (2 different locations) in the same organisation, connected by 1Mb connection. We like to start using a BES server but considering the limited number of users, we only want to install the BES server in 1 location.

Will this work? Will performance be seriously degraded because of the 1Mb connection?

If the latency between BES and Exchange will be under 15ms, then you are safe. If not, you have to place BES in both locations or consolidate the Exchange.
I wouldn't say that it won't work, but it will cause you troubles.

I think 15ms is a bit tight. Put it this way, anything south of about 75ms is something you want to avoid.

Agreed with Dookie, you will need some like a 10Mbit L2 connection between the two offices, a T1 would do but were I live they don't have T1's anymore as they all GigE and Fibre here.

I have a 1.5mbit mpls network to a site in west, midwest, and east coast. A single BES server is sits in the west coast. I haven't had any problems around 45ms. Though, it could possibly be the WAN accelerator we have.

BES uses MAPI (RPC) to communicate with Exchange, and RPC traffic does not respond well to latency issues. It is the latency that is the problem and not just speed.

So even if you have a 10NMB WAN connection with high latencies you are inviting trouble.

Sigh... A 10Mbit L2 connection from Cogent Communications won't give you an latencies issues. I'd know we have several of them connected between our production sites around North America.

Maybe you were referring to if he ran a CAT6 cable from one office to another, then okay I can see it.

Our BES is in our data center along with an Exchange server in Hartford, CT and we have a 2nd Exchange server in Boston and have not had any issues with BBs so far.

Thanks everyone. I think it will work. The latency is somewhere between 20 and 35ms...
