Default Ugly Icons for applications

Please Login to Remove!

Has anyone noticed that various after markets applications have ugly icons? The standard themes have two icons that simulate various changes when highlighted, but after market software seems to forget about the icon used for their applications.

I had someone today pick up my 8800 and said that some of the icons look like crap. Is there a web site that offers replace icons for blackberry applications?

True, some of the icons lack imagination or artistic flair . . . . however I consider desktop prettification to be a Palm of Pocket PC affectation!
I rather like the unpretentious image the BB gives out!

Hi Dwaine,

Marc from Ascendo here.

Up to now, RIM hasn't given 3rd party developers the ability to use application icons that change when highlighted. We have requested this a few times and RIM developer support recently told us they are adding it to the next release of their JDE (Java Developer Environment).

The current version of the BlackBerry OS doesn't allow you to replace application icons.

We are working to improve our application icons. For the latest release of Ascendo DataVault, our Password Manager for BlackBerry, we hired a designer to create a few mock-ups and did a survey of our beta testers to see which one they preferred. They selected the following application icon...

...to replace the application icon used in previous versions.

Actually, that's not true.

See my BB developer blog post about it: Application Icons 101 « BlackBerry Developer SideShow

It's been in there since OS 4.1

Of course, as one of the comments to that post indicates there is a gotcha but it's still do-able (some may argue however with a nasty compromise - you app. will have to run at startup - which if that's what you're thinking too then fair enough).
